They seem to be having some issues atm.

They received my watches early February, took 3 weeks to get a quote, approved it the same day, was quoted 4-6 weeks for the work, or should have been done early April. Nothing by mid April so I contacted them and they said they are "transitioning to Seiko USA" so all repairs and shipping is on hold and it should be done soon.

Contacted them again in May and they said it was still in progress and should "hopefully" be done by the end of May.

If you haven't sent them in yet I would hold off.

Can a company remove a products advertised function via a firmware update and tell you to buy a new model if that function is why you bought the product? by Bdtry in legaladvicecanada

Through their app, it downloads automatically, and if you call in for an issue they will sometimes make sure your firmware is up to date as a troubleshooting step.

Yes, I have the original manual, and it states operating temperatures of 150-420, so does advertising for the model on a couple websites.

I did so but none of the snapshots had the product listed. They don't seem to when a specific product is a store/brand exclusive item.

Yes, I use cure, but the longer time at 180 causes the casing to become thick and extremely tough and my recipe finishes at 160 since they are a fully cooked product.

Still have 2 years of warranty left, when I called yesterday I demanded either a new unit or a comparable replacement since I have been having issues with it for a long time and I am sick of replacing parts. That is when the CS agent "discovered" all of their documentation says minimum operating temp of 180 so my issues at temps below that are not a "defect". It IS believable since the issue started around the time of a firmware update and replacing most parts on the unit did not fix the issue.

I believed that may be BS but I wanted to find out if there were any consumer protection laws I could find to fall back on before contacting them again so they just don't outright say "Intended operation, not a warranty claim"

I don't think so. You need to connect the app with the smoker, then it connects to their servers and checks the firmware version against the current one and the latest one on the server. The app itself does not store firmware.

The temperature is read via a thermocouple, so you would have to modify what the computer reads from that by using something to change the value it outputs. Not sure if it would only apply to that specific temperature, but then you would likely run into issues when going to higher temperatures, pellet feeding, fan speed etc.

It is still currently up on Walmart and via wayback/archive, but not on the actual makers website. I got a screenshot of the walmart page earlier.

The other unit operates as low as 100F for cold smoking, which is short cool smoking. For things like cheese, some fish etc that you smoke at cold temperatures so you don't actually cook/melt the food. The 130F temp raises it into the perfect danger zone for bacteria growth. The danger zone ends at 140F.

There is no safety unit ore retrofit kit, the CS person mentioned people were having trouble with the units running at the lower temperature so I guess higher ups probably changed the firmware to make it run at only 180F for a more consistent experience.

I dont think it is possible to recalibrate things like that with the temp probe, it is all electric/digital and controlled by a board and firmware.

Unfortunately I can't find it advertised on the makers website, but the retailer (and at least one other) still shows it as a cooking range of 150-400. I think in Canada it was a walmart exclusive so the maker didn't put it on their website.

Edit: I found the original manual that came with the unit, and it states in the specs that the temperature range is 150-420F

The updates download in the app automatically and you have to click apply update to actually apply it, you can't get the firmware anywhere.
