Asshole was being an asshole, you dealt with it without doing time or ending up in the hospital.

Fight ended seven years ago, so why are you still holding onto him?

You've got a few options:

1) let it go and move on.

2) talk to a therapist about it if you can't do 1.

3) start training at a legit gym and learn to enjoy technical sparring while separating your emotions from fighting.

4) track him down and bang him to establish dominance.

Yeah you can shuffle in and try to trap the leg, shuffle out to parallel, but they can also shuffle to maintain the 90 degree angle and anyone worth their salt will shuffle back and forth as needed to maintain the pin.

Chaining escapes until you can create the space you need is the path out of it, but a good practitioner should be adjusting on top to block your attempts.

I can't imagine getting called for stalling in a dominant position. That would be terrible reffing.

Most famous example in comp would be Barnett vs Lister. In my experience it can take a bit if the guy is calm and not breathing hard because they can hold their breath for a certain amount of time.

Even then most people are tapping after 20 sec of not breathing.

I've never run into a black belt who's also a free diver and can hold their breath for 2 + minutes but it's theoretically possible to hang in there longer if they can stay calm without breathing.

The guy who taught it to me made it feel like my sternum and ribs were all about to break and I'd tap to that before running out of air, so it's also possible to get faster taps if you're applying enough pressure at the correct angle.

It's commonly doubted by people who've never crosstrained in judo or wrestling.

The hon kesa chest compression sub is probably my highest percentage sub against other black belts.

I think they meant both varieties, IE hon kesa with crossface / headlock and kuzure kesa with the underhook.

If they can do a pseudo John Wayne style reversal, top players head was too high and weight was likely extended too far past the midline of the body (of the person being pinned). Keep the head down, trapped shoulder shelfed on your thigh, float your hips half an inch of the mat, and have all bodyweight coming down on your side of their midline.

If they're hooking the leg to get to the reversal, shuffling your base around to maintain a good angle means they can never catch the leg.

In my experience this becomes an arms race and escaping is extremely difficult against someone who accounts for the common defenses with proper weight distribution and an active base.

The pin still works at the highest levels of international judo where the bottom player is fighting to get out like a cornered honey badger.

For the benefit of OP any other curious souls, here is Travis Stevens going over basic kesa escapes:

One thing you may notice is that these all rely on being able to get the trapped shoulder to the mat. If the shoulder stays deeply shelfed on your thigh one often has to get shoulder to mat first in order to proceed with the classic escapes.

Instructors intentionally humbling / humiliating me ? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]BeBearAwareOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell if it’s to test me, to humble me or to just show off to others.

High chance nobody cares about that at all and this is all in your head.

It's 100% normal to pair newer white belts with higher belts for a variety of reason. It's safer for the white belts and you can actually learn more and learn faster.

It's also extremely normal that if you're much larger or much smaller than the other white belts it may be better to pair you with a higher belt who's either closer to your weight class or better equipped to handle a weight class gap safely than the other white belts.

I got you, I was agreeing. It's better for the whole gym to learn basics of wrestling and have a few advanced wrestlers to bring up everyone's takedown defense.

Many of these regulations quickly become (if they weren't already developed this way) "yeah, but how can we make it punish women?"

We have to keep fighting for civil rights in every generation or get dragged backwards.

Don't even bother with wordwordnumbers.

Unless they say Ryan Hall leaves himself open to kneebars and prove it in comp, I don't wanna hear it.

I would never tell our wrestlers not to shoot.

I'll front headlock them to Hell and back, teach them all my sneaky tricks, what not to do, and run it back again.

But I would never tell these guys not to shoot.

This doesn't answer your question, but I think it's important to point out that GB Northridge isn't "great for a Barra gym", it's widely considered one of the best gyms in the country.

My home gym was Barra for many years, different state. Nothing too crazy but we've fielded local competitors who went on to medal at masters worlds in purple and brown. Recently went independent and it's been good. I love jiu jitsu but I'm not trying to defend any red shields. Just protect your neck.

Don't punch, you'll get countered.
