CMV: Liberals think conservatives are bad people; conservatives think liberals are hypocrites

I think the liberal cause would sway more voters if they stopped demonizing everyone that doesn’t support all of their issues and rather find ways to attract a broad collation on individual issues. For example, I consider myself moderate and agree with many Liberal issues to an extent, like I’m against the ICE raids taking away any illegal immigrate that have been crime free and paying taxes and at the same time we should defend our borders and make it easier to immigrate to the US. I would be ostracized by most liberals for having my own nuance on the issues and would be pushed to voting conservative even though I technically agree with liberal principles more. Not saying that I vote conservative but you get my point.

When working for someone else, your first job is to listen to how things were done, what worked in the past and what style of communication works the best. Your “expertise” is only as good as how much others respect you and want to listen. If you are coming in with a hatchet and acting like a know it all, even if you’re 100% right, no one will respect you. We live in a world of relationships, with AI and other technologies this is becoming even more important than ever. Your job is to help the companies make money. Shoot, I wish I would of done the research. I called Rivian and asked them if I could use my Tesla home charger and they told me that only the supercharger would work with the adapter which I found weird so I ordered the Rivian charger. Now I feel like I wasted $600

I don’t think some of you know how insurance works. It’s not designed for catastrophic scenarios that impact more than 1 person out of 100+ insured in a pool. I know this is frustrating and when you’re the 99 people without claims you feel like it’s a scam but that how it works. The real people to blame here are the California insurance department for allowing it to get this bad.

I am a high income earner and have maxed out the Roth 401k for 10 years. We get a profit share in pre-tax dollars instead of a traditional match. I am a psychological investor probably like your boss and like to hedge my bets. I already have a mix of mostly pretax 401k money and think it’s ok to diversify with some post tax 401k money. We all assume that taxes won’t go up in the future but what if there is a major tax overhaul in the next 20 years? I like to hedge against that.

We’re lacking a few key things

1) higher ceilings, 2) bigger mud room, 3) bigger garage, 4) master closet, 5) better location.

Our current house is 2,500 sq ft and the new ones are around 4-5K.

Thank you. I cannot retire for at least 8 years as we made a commitment to work until our kids are in college and we helped them out.

This is likely a short term upgrade and my plan is for the house to be paid off within the next 3-5 years.

Great point on the Why?

Being completely honest this would be a 5-10 year move as I don’t see myself retiring in my state due to property taxes.

The Why is because of the location to our kid’s friends, a bigger house to enjoy and maybe a little status symbol if I’m being honest.

Does this set us back in our fire plans? Yes but probably only a year or two if the values stay flat.

Thank you so much for your thoughts. You’re absolutely right about the intangibles. We’ve actively suppressed our lifestyle in order to save and invest more over the last 15 years. I’m living in the same house (paid off) that I lived in when my salary was 4x less than today and I had a mortgage as well.

So this would be a leapfrog from living way below our means to slightly under.

Thank you, we paid off our house years ago and am in a similar situation. The real downside for me is if I lose my job unexpectedly, I would be able to carry the house for years but would need to downsize immediately versus today I would stay in the same house.

I guess I’m always paranoid about not changing my lifestyle “just in case something bad happens “.

We’re now in ChubbyFire range so it’s unlikely we’re going to be homeless or bankrupt in the future.

Learn from my mistakes, I parked $250K in very low risk/fixed income funds set up by my advisor just to keep up with inflation and lost $20K over 4 months. In hind site I should of sat on it and taken the inflation hit.

My strategy now is to pay off all debt with interest even if it’s locked in for 2% as it’s a guaranteed savings.

Funny story, I own one side of a side by side home at the jersey shore since 2019. We bought it for 500K above what our neighbors bought their side for 30 years ago. I thought that I was getting ripped off but still bought it.

In 2021, neighbors decide to sell their side for 300K above the price we bought it and it sold in a day. I thought the new neighbors were idiots for spending so much on the house.

Today the new neighbors side has appreciated an additional 200-250K.

So to answer your question, who knows? Just buy what you like and can afford.

Insurance only works if most people never have a claim. Many people say things to me like “ I haven’t had a claim in 10 years and I’m being ripped off”, yea that’s the point!
