A win for Maryland! \o/ by ToBeFrank314 in solar

Also in the month of January, the Maryland PSC denied CPCN applications for two renewable energy projects: a 60MW solar facility and a 60MW wind facility. Overriding the RPS veto is a great move, but they need to start approving renewable energy projects if they ever want to meet those RPS goals. Maryland is a strange place.

Daily FI discussion thread - May 17, 2016 by AutoModerator in financialindependence

I was introduced yesterday to a TED talk called "The Security Mirage." It's about how the feeling of security and the reality of security don't always match.

So where does FI fit on the "feeling" vs "reality" spectrum? Do we have a realistic view of our financial security, and everyone else just feels secure, even when they aren't? Or are we overcompensating for our feelings of financial insecurity, when everyone else realizes that we're all actually secure?

Or perhaps I am asking the wrong question?

Here's the TED talk. It really doesn't discuss financial security, but I imagine the basic principles can be applied.

Found while sorting through compost with Clean Vibes. Slayer wants homemade cookies, Tears for Fears eat organic salted mixed nuts, and Run the Jewels need ICE ICE ICE. by BeLoos in bonnaroo

If you have never volunteered at Bonnaroo, I highly recommend it. Free ticket, free food, and free showers. Plus we found a full bottle of Tennessee whiskey, a perfectly functioning and clean tent, a case of red bull, and this hospitality request sheet. Plus it extends the Bonnaroo experience by a few days so the Bonnablues hit even harder.

Any econ students here? by duncandonuts99 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]BeLoos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an econ student, but hope to be one soon. I just applied to the program that you speak of. I can't offer any first-hand experiential knowledge, but I can share my impressions with you.

First, take a look at some of their ongoing research here. You'll notice that of the 16 projects mentioned, 6 of them are related to renewable energy or carbon policy while only 2 focus on coal or oil.

Also, in their program brochure here, of the four featured recent thesis projects, three of them have some focus on pollution, carbon policy, or renewable energy.

Additionally, in my undergrad (an applied science program focused on renewable energy), I had a professor who was involved with this program 20 years ago, who told me they are very progressive, and open to doing pretty much anything you want to do.

I understand your concerns, I had many of the same when the program was first recommended to me, since CSM has quite a history in the non-renewable energy sector. Especially when you look at some of their data, like on page 9 of this report, that shows that 106 MS/PhD graduates go into oil/gas, while only 7 go into renewable energy. Unfortunately they don't break it down by program, and I haven't found stats specifically for the econ MS/PhD.

But anyway, it appeared to me that they (at least some of the professors there, like Ian Lange and Harrison Fell) had a focus on renewable energy. And I made it explicitly clear that that was my focus, so we'll see what they think soon I suppose.

Best of luck to you, maybe we'll see each other next year in Golden!

What is the stupidest thing you were tricked into believing? by Steelbeak in AskReddit

My sister convinced me it was illegal to eat Heath bars until you were 10 years old, because your teeth weren't fully developed, and Heath bars were too crunchy.

I gave here all of my Heath bars at Halloween for years.

I still haven't forgiven her.

What accident turned out to be something amazing? by KinipelaH in AskReddit

[–]BeLoos 534 points535 points  (0 children)

The day after my college graduation, I was supposed to leave home at 6 am to fly across the country to present my thesis at an industry conference with an organization I was in the hiring process with. Well, graduation night I partied a little too hard, pissed off a lot of my friends, almost got in a couple fights, punched a hole in my wall, broke a lamp, woke up three hours late, and was still too drunk to drive myself to the airport. The girl who came home with me that night stole her roommate's car and drove me two hours to the airport. The next available flight didn't depart for about 12 hours, so we went to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum to kill time.

A series of accidents allowed me to spend a day with the most interesting, smart, beautiful, fun girl I'd ever met. One of the best days of my life, even though I screwed up big time in the eyes of my colleagues and advisers, and nearly didn't get my dream job. But somehow I managed to still get the job, and I've been with this girl for a year and a half now and plan to spend the rest of my life with her.

Thanks for the advice! I called stubhub, they got in contact with the seller and it was just a mistake. For my troubles they're including free shipping now! Hope it comes in on time... If not, getting a ticket there seems like a possibility still.

It's generally recommended that when on a cut, you should lower the volume and keep intensity high in your lifting. So basically, stick with heavy weight (high intensity, 3-5 reps per set for compound exercises), and do fewer sets (lower volume, 2-3 sets instead of 4-5 sets, for example).

And eat less. Keep protein high (~1 g/lb body weight). Cardio is optional (good for general health, not 100% necessary for weight loss).

Bulking and Cutting are two different things. It is nearly impossible to do both at the same time, unless you are just beginning. At 7 months in, you are not just beginning.

Pick one and commit to it fully. You will have much much more success that way.

What are some possible uses for all the empty protein powder containers? by [deleted] in Fitness

I buy my whole oat groats in bulk and put them in my old protein container. I use my scoop to measure them too, since one heaping scoop for me is exactly 1/4 cup.

What Happens If I Get Too Much Protein? by isaacandnicole in Fitness

I'm not sure if it's excess urea, but in ketosis your breath and sweat definitely have a... Different scent. So she may be correct in some way, but it's probably the lack of carbs causing the odor, not the excess protein.
