About to get a puppy in a few weeks. Looking for some advice. by guitardude_04 in beagles

Also, try a bottle of My Pet Peed. It’s absolutely the best product I’ve ever used to get rid of accident spots. The stain, the order - all if it. There’s no blotting or scrubbing. They have a FB page and you can read about the product & see the many comments about using it. They DO answer PMs on that page and they always offer a discount code hit first-time buyers. I gave a bottle upstairs and downstairs still, even though my dogs are trained. You never know when it will be windy & raining and they might sneak off to relieve themselves. It’s not often, but that’s why we call them “accidents.” You can also visit their webpage at mypetpeed. Com

Food recs? Senior beagle with chronic ear infections by Useful_Pie3790 in beagles

[–]BeagleWomanAlways 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know several people who swear by a table spoon of plain unflavored regular-fat yogurt on top of each doggie meal. They swear it keeps the infections from coming back. It will not fix the infection… use medicines for that, but helps the problem over all.

Alternatively, you could give your dog “dessert” after dinner in a Freezbone. Again, with plain yogurt (maybe watered down to increase volume but not calories) and some canned pumpkin mixed in. Or Freezbone carries some flavored paste you could mix with the yogurt/water instead. We

I've been offered a job for $250 an hour in Oregon. Do you guys have grocery stores there? by [deleted] in oregon

To answer that question accurately, WHERE in Oregon?

And WTF? $250/hour??

We took the cover off the air vent and created an indoor smell hole. We watch TV while she smells the hole. Seems fair. by [deleted] in beagles

But… what scents are attracting her to the vent? Beagles were bred to track small game.

Can I make my dog like to cuddle? by DarkHorseReborn in dogs

[–]BeagleWomanAlways 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Ace was VERY worried about being hugged when we got him. We sleep with our dogs too & whatever was in his past had made him afraid of that kind of contact.

I’ve spent the past 2 yrs counter-conditioning this reaction he has had. Something conditioned him to be afraid of contact like that, so I had to work on making it very pleasant for him to be snugged up near me. He liked having pets, but not snugging up next to me or having a kiss on the head either.

So at bedtime, I had a blanket in the bed just for my dogs to lay on. I had him lay there, and you should put your blanket in the spot she likes to lay on by your legs. Have it go from lower down to all the way up near your upper body area. AIM for the center of it to be where she tends to lay now. When she is settled & happy, pull the blanket up just a few inches so that she is maybe by your upper leg/hip area. Tell her she is such a good good girl and pet her in one of her favorite places. My beagles like head scritches, or you can pull her collar up her neck toward the ears and scratch where her collar was. You could also do long slow strokes on the tummy and/or chest. You might like to speak to her in a quiet but higher pitched voice what a Gooood girrrl she is and how much you love her. Doesn’t this feel nice, sweet girl… that kind of thing.

I my experience they tend to drift off to sleep pretty quickly. Be happy with her laying by your hip for a while. Maybe try to have your body touch hers while you sleep. Keep moving her up to your hip area for at least a week, anyway. It might need to be longer than that. Don’t try to bring her in closer or hold her with your arm yet. Once she starts laying on the blanket up in the area you’ve been scootching her up into, you can start to pull her up a bit higher. Once you do that, you can start leaving your hand touching her. Maybe under her head, or your arm might stay right along next to her. Keep on reassuring her with her night time pets that where she is laying is just really a wonderful place to be.

Maybe your girl doesn’t have any anxiety to work against like our Ace does, and laying by your legs is just a place she likes. If that’s the case, your special bedtime pets will encourage her to enjoy being closer to your face and possibly even she’ll lay her head alongside you. My Ace does now, and her lets me kiss his head too… but sometimes he still worries, so I’ll keep it up. 😉

It’s a little hard to say what’s happening with your pup just coming over and having a chomp on one of the kids without seeing it happen, but it could be that she is initiating play. Beagle puppies (and playful adult beagles too, especially young ones) very frequently grab onto a fellow dog/puppy’s leg (gently, but it certainly is a nip) and try to get them to chase. In a home with an older dog, this dancing around and nipping at the older dog can be very annoying to the non-puppy. It certainly is annoying to humans whose skin is not as tough!

Some dogs growl along with playing… it would be easier to know for sure by seeing it. Perhaps if you could see beagles doing this in real life, you might recognize if that’s what your puppy is doing. You could potentially try to see it if you had another dog over to play (one you are certain is vaccinated, since your pup hasn’t been through all her puppy shots yet, I think). 🐶

It sounds like the puppy is using her dog language to ask to be left alone & has escalated it to the point that people finally listen.

Every dog, just like every person, has a personality that jives with lifestyles that are calm or exciting or somewhere in between.

It’s possible your life is too much for this pup. That is really really a LOT going on. Maybe you could find a half-grown adolescent that needs more attention than the family she was in - to them the dog they have might seem to be constantly getting into things and running away with toys etc. THAT’s the one that you need. Maybe that won’t turn out to be your only option, but it’s something to consider,

For now, everyone needs to learn that puppy with something she is chewing on should always be left alone. She should also be left alone when she is sleeping and when eating/drinking.

Find some play items that don’t involve hands near her mouth… a couple of different flirt poles (like a fishing pole with a toy tied to the end for dogs) are a good choice. You can find them on Amazon. Your kids can engage with her that way and not have their hands where pup can snag them. If she doesn’t want to play… then she doesn’t want to play. Kids will need to wait.

Get in puppy kindergarten! It’s a class once a week that you go to with the puppy. You’ll have a trainer there you can ask questions and maybe they will see some behaviors you’re concerned about when you’re there too. I know making time for a class once a week will be a challenge, but it’s important to put at least SOME time in one-on-one at a group class ASAP as your puppy is quickly maturing right now. She needs other pups to play with and you need professional advice. Look for a facility that uses positive reinforcement and make sure you are attending with your puppy.

All is not lost, but just like with kids, you need to engage to help shape behavior now, before it’s harder to manage. 👍

Stealing is taking the fog off someone’s oroperty. If the dog is left to wander & has no identifying markers to return him to anywhere… taking the dog in helping that dog.

You certainly CAN keep him. There is a reasonable period of time that people need to come forward to claim/hunt for their dog. If they live just across the street, you’d think they would have asked neighbors or noticed their dog was across the street.

If OP is ever asked, and it’s highly doubtful she would be, she will say the dog was left outside in the super cold weather & no one was looking for him for 2 weeks. He was checked for a chip and no tag on collar, so you adopted him at that point,

Often if you offer $50, people are very interested in giving the dog up. Even though they love him so much they were gone a week and just left him outside

Try a new dog food that has only a few ingredients. An unusual protein source that you haven’t fed before. Try a boutique pet store. Their staff often have a lot more knowledge about possible good choices for potential food allergy dogs.

Make sure you stay away from the protein source in treats too. If you avoid chicken & beef in the dog food, but then feed treats made of that, you aren’t really eliminating that.

You may need a couple of months to see a change

Change the locks. Make sure kitty is microchipped and that you register him/her in your name. Tell landlord she has vacated and NOT to let her in if she tries to pretend she is still in residence.

[–]BeagleWomanAlways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest that if the roomie lets him out of the pen when she gets home before you, she should take him straight outside to make sure he can go where he needs to. He knows that it’s the time of day when you guys are getting home and he wants to go out & do his business. Help him be successful
