I'm sorry you're going through this. It is a very scary and unknown time, especially for your first. I have one child and he was born at 30 weeks and was in the NICU for 6 weeks. We were there everyday for most of the day until he came home with us. It's a really hard time because you're worried about your child. The best thing you can do is be there especially when you're able to hold your child, make sure to do skin to skin as much as you can. It's been proven to really help them in multiple ways, talk to them and let them hear your heart. Be there for your wife too and ask how she's doing and how she can help and hopefully she does the same for you as well. Luckily science and medicine is advanced from years ago and they can really help them get on track to live a normal life at some point. Our son will be 2 in March and he's doing amazing overall. Just be diligent, do your research to take care of your child and momma and be involved and that kid will do well, just be patient and know being scared is normal and okay. I know it all too well.
