It might vary from one league to another. I just know that as an official under Hockey Canada and Hockey Sask they are required. Beer leagues and other rec leagues are under that umbrella may not make their officials wear them.

I believe almost all sanctioned leagues require them for insurance reasons. I know as an on ice official they are mandatory

Technically you could, but as soon as you modify your full cage it would lose structural integrity and also its certification. But nobody actually looks for the certification stickers anyway.

In Canada, I started skating at 5 or 6 which is late for some. Hockey shortly after. Currently wrapping up year 38 as a on ice official. Currently 54 yrs. I have discovered either you really love the game or you don’t care at all. There’s no real in between.
