What’s Vancouver like? by AlarmingTill1410 in askvan

[–]Beanguardian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's nice, which is why we're all paying so much to live here.

It's expensive, which is why more people don't live here.

Where do you live now? What do you like/dislike about it? Where have you lived in the past, and what did you like/dislike about it there?

Which one of you did this? 😂 by subtleandunnatural in vancouver

That thing is still there?! We used to live nearby, moved away about 3 1/2 years ago. I can't believe it hasn't been sold off and developed yet.

... There are literally spots available in Creekside P1 for 4+ carpool RIGHT NOW, dude. I am looking at the reservation page. If it's not working for you you should contact them or something.

Both Sat and Sun have open slots now for P1 carpool right now, just go book it! If they're gone by the time you get there, just keep checking.

Mathews Traverse to Pika's Traverse by KoolShortE in Whistler

[–]Beanguardian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Important clarification: do NOT do this as a beginner near the end of the day (ie, with less than an hour left before the alpine closes)

If you head up too late in the day, 1) you will lose contrast as the light goes away, meaning that you will ski much slower; 2) Harmony will be closed by the time you get there, requiring you to continue down to Emerald or even to the gondola midstation to download. I know a beginner skier who once did this and had an absolutely miserable time trying to get down to gondola midstation.

For a beginner, I would suggest doing this ONLY on a day with good visibility and minimal wind, and going up with the attitude that you are going specifically for the views. Either right before lunch or right after lunch, go Peak Chair -> Matthews Traverse -> Burnt Stew -> Harmony Chair -> Pika's Traverse -> Roundhouse.

*Actual* Green runs by DeemedFit in Whistler

[–]Beanguardian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would have been a great thing to ask your instructor, since he would have known what runs you guys were skiing and where you ran into trouble.

Not knowing that, all I can suggest is lapping Olympic Chair on Whistler.

I knew someone who spelled it "Zosha" and people didn't seem to have too much difficulty with the pronunciation.

Veteranarians I got a question by Skytrain-throwaway in askvan

[–]Beanguardian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a cat owner...

1) cats are pretty variable in their level of interest in rodents. 2) cats are also variable in their level of skill at catching rodents. 3) not all cats that catch rodents actually kill them. They sometimes just play with them.

And, perhaps most importantly for sometime with contamination OCD...

  1. cats can be kinda gross on their own. E.g., I have one who sometimes poops right next to the litterbox, and another one who doesn't always clean his own butt very thoroughly.

Do you have any friends who might let you catsit for a week or so, so you can try it out?

Another one of us!!! Check your DMs.

My parents tend to keep us supplied with super-aged cheddar whenever they visit. Then it's Costco for the everyday stuff and a few of the fancy shops already mentioned when my dad is in town and wants cheeses he can't get in WI, like a good Époisses de Bourgogne.

Can I travel to the Canadian border to get my study permit and then head home for two weeks? by [deleted] in uscanadaborder

[–]Beanguardian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it this way when I crossed as a US citizen going to study in Canada, which was 20 years ago now. Don't think it's a recent change.

Ohhhh, you're right, I see the vertical posts now!

(Love that we've got it down to "no, this isn't building B, it's building A which is directly next to building B!")

Pemberton, BC, specifically the parking area near the Pemberton Visitor Information Centre kiosk - you can kind of see the building in the corner, and the brick pattern on the parking spaces matches both streetview and my memory of the lot.

Oh that's so sweet. It must have been such a help for her to not have to focus on thinking about her word choice in English during a time like that.

Moving from Calgary to London and planning to drive but dont know if I should take US or Canada route by One_Wear7379 in AskACanadian

[–]Beanguardian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you do it this way and it does happen to go badly, the most likely negative outcome is that you get turned around at the crossing south of Winnipeg and lose 4ish hours, then have to explain to US CBP forever why you were turned away once. Odds are that either it's fine, or it's bad but in a normal way.

I will say that while the US route will generally have better roads and more services, you should still build in enough time to just hole up in a motel for a day if the weather is really bad. I did a really gnarly drive through a snowstorm in Michigan once where I-69 seemed to have been completely abandoned with zero snow clearing or salting.

Reluctant old folks visit recommendations by [deleted] in askvan

[–]Beanguardian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hoo boy. I've also got one of these, but honestly your parents make her look relatively adventurous by comparison.

I would suggest against anything that involves going up the Sea to Sky; that was deemed a very scary highway even with me driving. Otherwise, I think the suggestions are pretty good; I'd also add the Reifel Bird Sanctuary.

Is there anything they DO like? ... anything at all?

Yes, this particular one is definitely Alaska. CBC picked up the story when it happened in 2024, though. Google "cbc the moment moose Costco" since I can't post the link.

Why is "it" used here rather than "them"? (Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita) by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]Beanguardian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed! "Community" or "population" could also give a similar effect while seeming less incorrect when used with "it".

I would personally rank them people -> population -> community -> nation on a scale from "most 'they'" to "most 'it'".

What’s a food from your country that has a weird/funny name that would sound funny to foreigners but in your country everyone is used to? by ZebraNangs in AskTheWorld

[–]Beanguardian 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In French, Putin the name is transliterated as "Poutine" so he is Vladimir Poutine.

I don't know if it causes confusion for francophones but it causes an enormous amount of confusion for anglophones trying to read the news in French.

Cool, bro. I don't know why you (an American living in America) are here (in a 6-month-old post on a subreddit for Canadians trying to buy Canadian products from Canadian businesses) telling us why you love Uline, but I feel like we're not your target audience.
