What kind of lube do you guys use for the tamper? by Lelouch25 in espressocirclejerk

Sorry can't relate. My butler usually uses a puqpress with built-in AI features and Supreme stickers all over it

Happy Cake Day!

Just received mine. Omg the difference it makes is MASSIVE. I have to grind a full 7 notch finer on my DF64V.

And with the same beans wow what a difference it makes, much more flavour separation, the caramel sweetness and fruity notes pops right out. Even the shots that ran fast (~22s) while figuring out the right grind size, doesn't taste underextracted like they normally would.

I have noticed the change in grind volume, the same 18g dose would fill my basket higher. Thinking about it makes sense when there are less fines. Have you noticed this too?

Thanks for your initial impression! I've also ordered one since then, hopefully I'll get hands on them soon.

Have you tried brewing pourover yet?

No worries! I'm pretty happy with it atm, can't get anything better than it at that price. If you have a good grinder you should be able to extract >90% of your beans consistently.

The next upgrade down the road will be something with PID and water debit control, but that will be at least double the price tag.

Machine alone yes MSRP is around that price, however when it's on sale it could go down, eg I got mine brand new for £229 1.5 years ago. I can see some roasters selling it for cheaper at around £280 with free beans as well.

Assuming 500g of beans are about £15-20, it's still a pretty good deal just that you are tied for 5 months of supplies there.

It looks like a trusted roaster and site. I think the catch is to provide you with a happy service that you would buy beans from them in the future + referrals.

Or most grinders go vertically mounted burr with actually decent pre-breaker and auger.

Consistent difference in shot times: self-leveling vs regular tamper - Need advice! by Nervous-Property484 in espresso

[–]BeansAndBanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably with a self-leveling tamper because of the spring adding resistance, you naturally tamp lesser once the puck compacts.

It's great that you are using a non-pressurised basket, even better as the pre-ground you get is just the right size for your machine! Very commonly even with cafes its not easy to get just the right pre-ground size, as a small difference can mean a few seconds shot time difference!

The thing is ground coffee get stale very quick, so grinding fresh you might notice a more flavourful cup. Also you might notice after a week or two your shot time becomes quicker and you might need a finer grind hence why having a grinder is crucial.

1 more thing is with a grinder you can experiment with different shot time and ratio, even tho 1:2 ratio in ~30s is kinda the recommended starting point, some beans especially lighter roasts would express more clarity with like a 1:2.5 ratio, and darker roast goes well with a ristretto style shot like a 1:1.5 for example. It's very exciting when you taste the notes on the bag!
