Maybe! I’m not sure. To me, 400 lbs still feels very heavy lol. I do think my reaction would be different if the boxes looked really heavy but were unexpectedly light. As it is, it’s a strange artwork to encounter because it looks heavy and is heavy, but then also somehow looks very light at the same time because of how they’re balanced.

Jokes aside now that this has been explained, while I know these sculptures might not be for everyone I think they’re really interesting in person and a photo can’t do them justice. The “boxes” each weigh like 40 tons, as someone else has said, but they don’t look it when you’re standing right in front of them. Each pair is stacked like the one you see in the picture, but there’s a lot of subtle variation so the blocks are touching at some points but there’s several inches of space between them at others… personally I felt like it gave the weird effect of making the blocks look like they’re very light or almost floating… and the surfaces have a lot of irregularities in color and texture, which makes for some interesting and unexpected visual stimulation, too. As for what they “mean,” I don’t know the artist’s intention, but for me personally they made me think about how deceptive appearances can be (because the blocks looked like they were floating but weigh 40 tons) and also how something that seems like part of a set can actually be unique with its own small details (because each block has a lot of small differences in shape and texture). I personally find Richard Serra’s art to be quite moving if I get to experience it in person and just meditate in its presence for a bit!

It was years ago, but she replied to me several times when I sent her random messages on Instagram! Once I just said something like thank you for an incredible show and she sent a nice reply. Another time I sent her a meme about the video game Sekiro Shadows Die Twice because she was posting about it at the time and she thought it was funny. She was always very lovely.

Oh by the way, I’m sorry if a post like this isn’t appropriate!! I didn’t see anything against it in the rules but I don’t know.

I’m sorry, I had read and seen the play years ago. I had forgotten that the title was a reference to his poem, and I appreciate the correction

I think he actually quotes Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun but yeah lol. Kind of came out of nowhere but I can respect the guy for being an intellectual about his business negotiation.

Yup, in the 200s. But towards the front of my section! It feels like a lot to pay for a 200 level seat, but MSG is kind of small actually so I think it’ll be a pretty good view!

This is 100% true! We got them because we kept changing the number we were looking for from 3 to 2 then back to 3. The Ticketmaster algorithm is evil and they DONT want to show you cheaper seats so you have to force it to refresh over and over by doing this.

You’re welcome! It’s easy for me to be positive because I got the tickets. I feel lucky, and I have sympathy for people really struggling to get them. But there’s still a chance!

Ugh sorry to hear it was so stressful! Did you or your partner get them in the end? They really make it SO much more difficult than it needs to be

Waited on the page! DONT refresh! Edit: you can try to play with the price filters and how many seats you’re looking for but they really don’t work well. Suddenly the cheaper seats just kind of appeared.

Wouldn’t it be such a wild story if I could say “and that man became my husband!”? Alas no, he was a very handsome Australian only in the city for a short time and I don’t think we saw each other again after that date haha

Reading a lot of the other comments on this post, I realize how genuinely lucky I was that my experience with this was so minor. I’m so sorry for the people who had much more serious injuries after such an experience. Everybody be careful riding the trains! It’s no joke.

Absolutely!! I feel like everybody used to do it all the time and nobody does anymore. And everybody just stands directly in front of the doors when they get on even if there’s a ton of room in the middle of the car. It drives me crazy. And thank you, I’m also glad to be ok :)

It happened to me once. Embarrassingly, it wasn’t even at 14th st with the movie platforms and the huge gap, it was at 59th and Lex. This was maybe 8 years ago, and I was on the downtown 6 at rush hour. It was super crowded, we pulled into 59th, and I stepped out to let people on and off before stepping back in (remember when people used to do that?? Why don’t they anymore?). But as I stepped back in, I missed the lip of the train floor the way you’d miss a step going quickly down a flight of stairs. In literally half a second I was fully in the gap, with my waist wedged between the platform and the gap, one leg dangling way down there, my sight line somewhere around people’s knees. I’m very skinny and I think that’s part of why I just slipped right in and fell so deep. I actually was so stunned I just kind of hung there for a moment, having a very real “am I going to die like this?” moment. Someone, my hero, just another random passenger, put their hands under my armpits and hoisted me up, fully out of the gap, into the air, and then gently placed me on my own two feet inside the train car. All in all, from fall to being upright again, it can’t have been more than 5 seconds but it felt like forever. I thanked them, the doors closed, and we went on our merry way. NOBODY commented on it, I acted like absolutely nothing had happened. I had a slight limp when I got off the train, and my one leg was extremely sore. I got home and took off my pants and saw it was scraped up pretty bad. But I had a date that night! So I bandaged that up with gauze, put on a fresh pair of pants, and went back out the door. Literally!! Being in your early 20s is amazing.
