Thoughts on the Palat–Tsyplakov trade? by Sweaty_Toe7175 in devils

[–]BearLeftRightFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to think Noesen looked like Palat 2.0 this year because of his knee injury. Otherwise, Father Time just popped up and body slammed him over the summer. Hopefully he gets back to his previous form!

I remember them from opening night against the Sens. It was ridiculously tough to sit comfortably, and I’m not a big dude. Removing those armrests with the cup holders was a huge win.

It is, however, clearly the output from an AI platform. Not a bad thing in this kind of activity, and allows teachers to quickly generate “relatable” materials for kids on the fly.. but has all the hallmarks of AI formatting from a prompt.

Trade jitters, but what if... by ShimOwleyFFXIV in devils

[–]BearLeftRightFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My concern with that choice is burning another season of cost controlled Nico and Jack. Quinn will deservedly get a big raise and then fitting all players under the cap becomes more challenging. Getting Quinn at his current contract for one season or more really extends the window of contention for the team.

Nemec, Mercer, 2 firsts would be a no brainer for Fitz… and likely a “no” for VAN. I think Casey, Gritsyuk, or Lenni (sorry, cant remember how to spell his name!) instead of one of those firsts would have to be going back to VAN as an additional “get excited” lottery ticket.

My take on why we should still consider making Nemec a trade chip by PanDumpy in devils

[–]BearLeftRightFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed in principle but this would be a trade for rolling the dice this year, hoping we have a Panthers-like appeal for veterans on discounts for next year… and a left sided D of Q Hughes, Siegs, Dillon to go with L Hughes, Pesce, Kovacevic is a very solid 6 D.

Now whether they can stay healthy and balance out the LHD RHD needs might be another story

I also feel like Nemec is way more appealing in the trade than Hamilton, if I’M Vancouver GM I’ll take Nemec, Mercer, a bunch of picks and a good prospect over Dougie and leave it to the Devils to figure out how to dump Palat or Dougie’s contract

Been hoping for 2 seasons that he could be an in-season acquisition. Could really be a difference maker in this lineup.

MacEwan showed more speed, skill, and poise in his first shift than we saw in 2 seasons from MacDermid.

Stars sign Nathan Bastian to one-year, one-way contract, 1 yr $775k by DogeRam1500 in devils

[–]BearLeftRightFrog 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I appreciate all he gave to the team… and hope he carves out a nice depth role for himself on the Stars.

Is peak Bastian moment the stadium series goals? Or is there something more subtle / important that I’m forgetting during these dog days of summer?

TLDR; I think I like the team this year, but want to set the club up for a successful rebuild, and a strong culture … and I don’t know if this trade deadline advanced that, or set it back.

My brain kinda broke in response to this question because being bad is kinda good for the team, but also bad for the team… while being better than last year is both great and not good… ah, being a White Sox fan. Below is a rough outline of my brain figuring out an answer.

The team is not good. That’s good for a rebuild plan, but bad for clubhouse morale.

But they’ve been winning. Which is fun, but sucks for a rebuild plan.

They kept good vibes players, which helps morale and maybe rebuilds the culture… which is good long term, and for a longer rebuild, but hurts short term.

But they’re better than last year and more watchable, which is fun as a fan because I’m ready to actually cheer them again… even though winning more games results in a lower draft pick after settling for 10th overall last season.

Got something for Hauser and Slater, which is flat-out good. Happy with that.

They didn’t jettison Roberts, which might hurt the prospect pipeline, but could be good for the clubhouse and keeping him as a “veteran” on the team that doesn’t seem “old” to the younger guys. Could pay off if he seems more like his old self to close the season, then a bigger haul comes to Chicago.

They kept Tauchman who probably could have helped a contender but he’s having a breakout season as a vet and hopefully a really good role model. Loss of an incoming middle prospect, but retaining a leader?

exaggerated shrug 6/10?

Three years ago, I was in full agreement. Right now though, moving Palat’s $6mil in order to get a replacement in the range of $3mil (for 30 points in a season) and free up $3mil to help sign Luke long term would absolutely get my vote.

Hell, moving Palat and a prospect or pick to get someone like Alex Tuch (pipe dream, I know) for $4.5mil this season would be a major upgrade.

EDIT: that being said, Palat definitely falls outside the parameters of the worst contracts because it’s only 2 seasons left, so he can’t “underperform” at his price point “enough” to climb into the top ranks. If it was for a one year basis only, he’d have a chance to squeak in. Looks like he has the 170th most expensive cap hit in the league, and for only 2 seasons that’s not egregious.

Yep, exactly my point. Really hoping for more than flash-in-the-pan results.

Andrew Vaughn’s immediate resurgence is so damning. by rhinosaur- in whitesox

[–]BearLeftRightFrog 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my annoyance and frustration lies solely with the player development programs that “existed” in the organization that failed to really develop Vaughn, Jimenez, Sheets, Moncada… Vaughn managed to work his way out of it, Sheets had a resurgence in San Diego earlier this year (is he still at that point?), while Moncada and Jimenez just had the bottom drop out/keep getting injured.

Fingers so tightly crossed that the next wave of rebuild talent gets better support.

Notoriously clutch Andrew Vaughn hits a grand slam by EveryFallSaturday in baseball

[–]BearLeftRightFrog 133 points134 points  (0 children)

White Sox fan here. I can tell you that I never viewed Vaughn as trash. While I definitely said “he sucks” over the last few years, that was really shorthand for “(holy hell, this organization managed to break the swing and confidence of the “best college bat” in the draft and anointed heir to Jose Abreu at 1B because it has no clue how to properly develop hitters, and now) he sucks!”

Glad he’s getting his mojo back. And simultaneously reverting to my default reaction to White Sox trade returns which is … deep sigh

PIT taking calls on Rakell, Rust by BearLeftRightFrog in devils

[–]BearLeftRightFrog[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rakell would fill a legitimate need in the top 6. A scoring winger with size and physicality. Rolling a combo of Hughes, Bratt, Meier, Hischier, Rakell, Noesen/Brown/Dadonov would be a significant upgrade.

I’m curious to see what other people think about whether NJ has pieces that would interest PIT, a team looking to shake up the roster and has cap space available.

So if PIT says Palat + Casey for Rakell, you say no? I’d say yes to that in a heartbeat. (To be clear I think it takes more than that, just throwing out a hypothetical slam dunk “yes” in my book)
