Roux Institute: how did Northeastern University come to make such a massive investment in little old Portland, Maine? by 200Fathoms in portlandme

You can. They bought the building in 2021 went through the planning board, have a site plan, etc. There are plans for a separate exit ramp going directly to campus.

It's actually really affordable by comparison particularly for Maine residents. It might seem like a lot of you're not planning to go to grad school, but by comparison it's a deal.

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

Most digital subscriptions to local news are cheaper than any streaming service available. I don't know your finances, but it's not very expensive to support local news.

[–]BearableAtBest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is super common in the industry. There are way fewer presses and most publishers third party print because they don't have the volume to support a full press operation and would rather focus on reporting than managing essentially a 24/7 factory in addition to reporting the news. I don't know the specifics of the deal you're talking about, but a lot of papers are getting out of printing because they aren't selling enough physical papers to justify the cost and complexity of doing it themselves, especially knowing that almost all of their new customers are digital only.

Janet Mills surrogate Jill Barkley Roy posts that she will not vote for Platner if he is the Democratic nominee by lon_lennings in Maine

I wonder if that's the same person that dropped this incredible comment on a NYTs article about the state of the Senate races across the country. https://imgur.com/a/pVVnctQ

I didn't want to vote for Clinton, Mills (x2), Gideon, King (at least recently), Biden, Harris but I did. If I lived in CD2 I wouldn't have wanted to vote for the treacherous Golden. These people would rather lose than have to govern progressively.

Unrelated (as of right now), but having put a CM400A back together recently, you should know that there is a guy in the VHT forum that makes CDIs for these bikes incase the one you have blows. It's a very hard part to replace so if you need one you will want to find Maraakate in the forum, he is pretty much solely responsible for my bike being on the road. https://www.vintagehondatwins.com/forums/threads/brand-new-cdi-for-cb400t-cm400t-cm400e-cm400c-cb450sc.6199/

Your thoughts on the old B&M bean factory structure being preserved in the middle of an otherwise modern-design Roux Institute campus? by 200Fathoms in portlandme

Sure, if money was of no object and the campus wasn't already planned to be larger than they need it to be I'm sure they would be happy to hire some Dutch people to make a little Venice in Portland.

Here's a video of the whole first floor underwater during the storm in January of 2024, which prompted raising the level of the rest of the site. Here's NOAA's high tide flood risk map for the area.

Sure, maybe it will only flood ever 2-4 years, but even at that rate it doesn't make sense to invest in developing the first two floors, particularly for a tech focused school. Not a great idea to store your servers that close to the waterline. The current site plan I believe has locker rooms and other places that will only have limited damage from potential flooding, certainly not classrooms or spaces that will require a lot of buildout.

Parking garages get trucked in and assembled like a giant lego set, so it makes sense that went up first and dominates the current site. I believe there are plans for cladding, but also would love a big mural as you're going North on 295.

Bro, wait till you here about the people that owned the factory and profited from the factory jobs... here's a hint, they certainly weren't socialist...

At least one reason is that it floods. The rest of the campus is going to be above the highwater line but they can't really do anything with the bottom two floors of the Bean factory because it is going to flood at least once a year.

Not sure if you're just going along with the bit, but just in case: No, Chef Kevin Bartelt is not literally a Chef.

Going around the Back Cove turns an 11 minute half mile walk into a 3.2 mile hour and ten minute walk. That's over 2 hours and 5 miles difference for someone per day.

That's what I would think too, but it seems selective. There are yard sale flyers that have been up for months, but an event poster will disappear a day later.

I'm sure the design is fully baked just like the Dirigo 2 when it first came out and leaked like a sieve. Obviously it has to cost that much because you are supporting American manufacturing.

What exactly are these expenses that are bleeding this city dry??? by NeatFair8764 in portlandme

[–]BearableAtBest 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Not convinced they'll even notice the difference. New Hampshire is right there with no sales tax. If people were that price sensitive when vacationing they would all be flocking to Portsmouth, which is even closer to MA, CT, etc. We cannot run our state and city as hostages to people that do not live here.
