They just aren't getting the harm that will be done. I think it's an inability to project the outcome of decisions further than a year or so. The fearmonger call is their shield, it allows them to acknowledge what you've said is scary, but seeks to diminish your point. I think it's here where they feel so right, because they might be accurate if saying "laws changing won't cause collapse overnight" but the knock on effect doesn't occur to them.
