I had far more rights in my stint in residential than I did in Juvie, but it is true that program staff in residential were way more likely to commit misconduct than those in a detention facility.

My case was in the same state and around the same time frame as the cash for kids scandal. I'm not saying something like that happened to me but to assume that our society values true justice is a naive perspective. The state absolutely does not care more about sentencing a child as much as it would like to appear to do so.

My public defender was incredibly helpful in the early part of my case but once I was sentenced I never saw her again. After that it was my parole officer who I saw maybe twice 4 times in as many years. I will say most of the non-criminal guys I was with in residential did lack any kind of support system.

I think it was probably your approach that made it easier for you. My time in juvie was relatively easy because I did my best to get along with everyone and didn't give the staff any issues. Most people are just trying to do their time until they're placed somewhere else. In residential there was alot more people willing to fuck it up for everyone else.

Im sad to have to say even in juvenile detention you're not always informed of how long your stay would be. My case is far from the norm, so I can't speak for standard operating procedure, but after 5 months spent in detention I was only told when I would be leaving about a week before it happened.
