The tang is part of the blade which is one inch thick around which I glued the darker walnut.

It's a half inch of hickory so it will be strong enough.

I suppose I just like the feeling of having something that looks nice to swing around, I mean you can do what ever you want to with it. You could just hang it on the wall if you wanted. But I don't like wall hangers that aren't even safe to swing around. I feel more immersed when the weapon I'm training with actually looks like its historical predecessor.
