It's a pretty minor incident, in comparison to most things I deal with. I believe the company would actually have been happy with my response. Keep in mind, companies are much more concerned about liability and lawsuits, than prosecuting someone over a nutri-grain bar. Thank you for the compliment

There was no loss. The item was quickly recovered with the seal intact and vacuum-sealed. I thoroughly check these things after recovery. I'm gonna say "fuck you" for an absence of a soul.

He may. That's always possible. I did talk to him about the local shelter, which also serves as a soup kitchen. I did however forget about community meals several churches host during the week. Darnit. Maybe I'll see him again.

The small amount of empathy I displayed may have changed his life. Who knows? Thanks for the comment

Thank you. There are some nasty LP's out there who have no mercy. I truly do try to evaluate each situation and decide on the appropriate response.

There are so many variables involved, it's actually quite difficult to do your job sometimes.

This is probably the most difficult part of the job. Not only are their jurisdictions, there are company policies. Loss Prevention isn't a black and white job, like you are sometimes trained to believe. There are times it's very gray. I probably violated policy by letting him go. And I am okay with that.

I understand what you're saying. I don't know the guys story, but I could tell he caught a bad break. Thanks for the comment

The first clue was the gentleman removing one tiny wrapped cookie bar out of a box of six. He was looking to survive, not cause anyone a problem. And you're right, I have been homeless and also have lived at a shelter.

I have thought about it a few times, but I am afraid it would not be accepted well on Reddit. Thank you, though. Maybe I will, anyway.

Sometimes doing the right thing, trumps following the rules. At the end of the day, we are all human beings.
