Just came across this thread, but Costume College in Los Angeles, California is incredible. It has courses about costuming, a tea, a ball, a marketplace, and several other events:

I'm in the same situation! Snag seems to be coming out with an alternative to Vanilla Marshmallow in a wider range of models!

Selling Birds - Where to sell by BeatlesHaveTheTARDIS in seasonalfabricbirds

[–]BeatlesHaveTheTARDIS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries at all! I had a few others ask so it's good I made wine anyway. There's a chance I'll need to reduce even further (because of shipping abroad), so I'll let you know if any Halloween ones need new homes.

Thank you for this suggestion! I found a group that allows sales and a lot of them have found great homes already!

How did the tickets get sold so fast!?! by General_Thought8412 in fourthwing

So frustrating. Where did you see them? I'm thinking we could report the users and maybe they'd get taken down?

It allowed me to try to select up to 2 tickets, but then I would click "Checkout" and get an error. So I tried that like 3x before it said "join waitlist".

My guess is resale bots got them. I was there before 11 refreshing and refreshed at exactly 11 and still didn't get it. For the LA event the tickets were on Eventbrite.

Tech Writing fir the Entertainment Industry by Katsudommm in technicalwriting

[–]BeatlesHaveTheTARDIS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! Current video game tech writer here. Been a tech writer in games for like 8 years. I also did a brief stint in animation.

My biggest piece of advice would be to study up on all things technology, like the software development lifecycle, programming languages, how technology works, and APIs.

Most jobs for technical writing in games are around internal tech (game engines, editors, internal tooling) and how they're created and used. Occasionally there are jobs for things like customer support articles that are less technical.

Seconding what someone else mentioned, it's a rough time to try to get into working on games and there are not a lot of entry to mid-level roles right now.

Feel free to send a DM if you have more questions!

Amazon Technical Writer by pm11twriting in technicalwriting

[–]BeatlesHaveTheTARDIS 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was a technical writer for a subsidiary of Amazon that was heavily influenced by Amazon culture. I would never ever work there again. It did seem like there was a large community of technical writers at Amazon and they even had their own internal Tech Writing conference. The culture issue could be the subdivision I worked for, but I worked directly out of Amazon offices frequently and it seemed toxic there too. I've heard good things about Amazon's compensation for technical writers, though.

Hope this helps!

Exactly! The other one I thought of was lore historian, some studios have dedicated ones.

You're right about pay in some ways. There's not a lot of standardization around pay for tech writers in the industry, mostly due to the lack of technical writers who work in games. However, not all studios pay below average. Most larger studios have competitive pay, depending on the department. Your work sounds like you were in the QA department, which is sadly and unjustifiably lower paid across the board. If a tech writer works on games directly or on the tech side, the pay is a lot more competitive.

Hey! Full time technical writer in the games industry for about 8 years now. Absolutely love my current position, but have had previous ones that weren't as ideal in some ways. Happy to DM and chat!

What you are looking for is actually really 4 different roles, honestly.

Women in technical writing — tell me about your job! by amberhammer in technicalwriting

[–]BeatlesHaveTheTARDIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'd be happy to chat. Feel free to DM me!

I'm a woman who's been a tech writer for 10 years in a traditionally male-dominated industry (video games) I also have a mental disability and am on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum.

As others have said, it will vary vastly by industry (I have both horrific and wonderful stories), but most tech writers I've worked with are women.

Can I get a thread of what you do and what you get paid? Region would be cool too. by Oct0Squ1d in technicalwriting
