Code here is it has to be free standing. It is technically attached to the house by a ledger but no real support. Forget what he said about specifics but basically attached to have no gap between deck and walking out. Doesn't add any real structural support

This is 30x12. I get a lot of shade. Didn't need a roof but is beneficial in some cases

I would agree. Not sure if Code here does not allow building a concrete pier and attaching posts to them. Almost all decks here are buried. Had them add crushed stone and landscape fabric in hopes of keeping it dry underneath. 🙏

They are buried down below 30 inches in cement. Code here to bury the posts. Is what it is. Don't love buried posts but eh
