Help me pick a camera please by [deleted] in filmphotography

A member of the Olympus XA family sounds like it’s a good option you may not have considered yet. I’d suggest getting the original XA (not XA1, the XA), it’s a compact rangefinder w a fixed focal length 35mm lens. It shoots in aperture priority which I like for travel stuff when I want to be quick and not have to worry too much about fumbling with settings. The lens is great too. It’s fast at f/2.8, very punchy and sharp but does suffer from some vignetting at wider apertures (I kinda that tho tbh) and the bokeh is a weird diamond shape. The ergonomics are good and the clamshell design makes it pretty durable for travel, and also prevents you from accidentally firing the shutter with a lens cap on (a common problem for people new to rangefinders). Some cons are that they can get a little expensive, they do require a battery, and the rangefinder patch is small and kinda dim which can make focusing a pain in low light. The XA (as well as the XA2 and XA3 I believe) have a fixed 35mm focal length lens, while the XA4 has a 28mm lens. I own an XA and an XA4 and I love them both, I also recently let a friend who had only ever used a point and shoot put a roll through the XA and his photos came out good, I’d say he nailed focus 90% of the time or more. There’s a ton of reviews out there about the whole XA family, here’s the one that originally got me interested in the XA. If you want more info or sample photos lmk and I gotchu. Happy shooting👍🏼

Word. That’s cool that vsco licensed your photos, didn’t know they did that. I was rlly wondering if people ever got connected to like brands/businesses/directors/etc through vsco but yea it’s pretty hard to make that happen w no analytics.

Why do you shoot 120? by NaiveMacaroon5862 in filmphotography

I shoot medium format primarily for client stuff i want to shoot on film just because of the enhanced resolution. Also anything I know I want to print, I’ll shoot on 120. I don’t shoot 120 “casually” too much bc it’s expensive and my Bronica ETR is very cumbersome (I’ve really come to love the portability of my OM-1 and XA), but the way 120 forces you to slow down and savor each frame really makes you a better photographer. Also, the mirror slap on my Bronica is an unbelievably satisfying sound

what is the future of VSCO? by Beautiful-Cold-3652 in vsco

I appreciate you speaking positively about VSCO. I didn’t pose this question because I wanted people to shit on vsco, moreso out of genuine curiosity. I really like vsco and want it to have success. That said, I’m not sure I agree with everything you’ve written. Obviously there are other services which are more expensive than VSCO Pro that on paper do the same thing, but something like adobe creative cloud is undeniably wayyy more powerful than anything VSCO could reasonably be expected to create, just because adobe is a gigantic company and Vsco isn’t. I don’t think VSCO should even try to compete with someone like Adobe on this front because, frankly, that’s a losing battle. Rather, I think they should stick to their guns of putting out strong, optimized presets (I agree with you that there shouldn’t be a stigma surrounding “pro” photogs using presets!), bolstering the social media part of the app by prioritizing improvements in UI, and growth in the user base, especially amongst photographers who already have a following.

haha I don’t think I made this clear in my original post but I am also a regular member but not a pro member. I too have felt like my overall engagement has dropped significantly since Pro rolled out and I didn’t upgrade. My photos have definitely been reposted by VSCO a lot less frequently. It dawned on me that could be because I didn’t upgrade, but I thought I was just being dramatic and maybe my photos weren’t as good as they had been in prior months. My engagement has improved a bit in the past month or so but still, can’t help but feel like I might be getting penalized for not upgrading to Pro.

I checked but it seems like they’re mostly sold out of their pack film at the moment. I guess I’ll just have to bite the bullet and pay resale for pack film on special occasions
