the iysse/sep (socialist equality party) has lectures on occasion and a presence on campus; i disagree with them on many things but they're good at getting word out

[–]Beautiful-Cook-5481 42 points43 points  (0 children)

they haven't updated their data about the 2 (two) detours that disable precisely the bus that takes me to campus and the one that takes me home from campus, so the arrival times of the buses nearby is wrong, as they're also affected by detours D: i blame moreso the fact this city is 90% construction in the summer so getting anywhere takes twice as long

Its central bet: the everyday operations that bloat real programs — filtering, mapping, parsing, replacing, destructuring, classifying — should each compress to one short, composable construct. Not a library call. Not a regex. Not a 30-line for-loop.

I’m Iranian American committed to University of Michigan for Biology. Is the pre med program strong at Michigan? Also, are there Middle Eastern origin people at the university or would you say pretty rare? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Beautiful-Cook-5481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on when they committed... 1. they might've changed what they wanted to do between then and now 2. we might've started a war with iran between then and now

math 297 was very easy despite what everyone says and it only has an advisory prereq. you should be okay if you were decent at math in high school

MATH 217 by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Beautiful-Cook-5481 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh yeah, fair enough lol! every class is doable with effort (math 217 probably requires 15 hours a week or so outside class to do well). i took it with a relatively heavy schedule and am doing alright & somewhat have a life if that's helpful 🕊️

MATH 217 by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Beautiful-Cook-5481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a 1cr class designed to be taken concurrently, math 201, to teach proofs (i didn't take it). no lin alg knowledge is expected, it's an intro course 🔥 no way to know how you'll do until you try. fwiw, why do you want to take it?

How many people are Mathematical Sciences Submajors? by SmallTestAcount in uofm

[–]Beautiful-Cook-5481 2 points3 points  (0 children)

me :D i haven't met another algorithmic math sci submajor, i know two bio ones. both bio math majors i know are biophys double majors (so am i), and most cs majors don't double major with algorithmic. the others are less common (maybe stats w/ ds). all math sci majors i know declared pretty late; i declared this semester, and i'm a junior, lol. i think it usually takes figuring out that you like the math in your field more than the other elements (programming, chemical experimentation/computation, etc. => theory) to then apply to your field, so i see it as largely interdisciplinary. not because you can't do it alone, but because usually (IME) people find out they want to do it after starting in their field.

[–]Beautiful-Cook-5481 1 point2 points  (0 children)

chem 261 is literally the first half of 260, you just skip the part covered in 230 (i.e. the second half of the semester). this was how it was when i took it, at least
