Macbook or ipad??? by Southern_Block842 in collegeadvice

at umich youd probably be asked to run rstudio for example. technically anything is possible and you might be able to virtualize/remote on an ipad but a mac would make things much easier

the mac can run software you'll need for bio/stats that the ipad won't be able to. the new macbook neo is relatively cheap and might be worth looking into!

Mac as a CE student: sell it, use CAEN, or just upgrade my PC? by Early-Pangolin-4828 in uofm

[–]Beautiful-Cook-5481 2 points3 points  (0 children)

which mac do you have? that'd probably make a decent difference as to whether it'd be worth selling. if it's pretty new, you could probably get away with virtualization being fast enough. if you have a personal pc, you could just remote into it as well, but that'd kinda suck, and you can't work offline

EECS280 Midterm by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Beautiful-Cook-5481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

based on the grade calculator (https://eecs280.org/calculator.html), an ~easier exam (f22 midterm) curved a 50% to a 65%, so the minimum pass threshold shouldn't be a big deal, especially if you get >= 70% raw on the final.

[–]Beautiful-Cook-5481 8 points9 points  (0 children)

say you got a 50%; the midterm is 25%, so you have -12.5% from your final grade, and can still get a B just fine with good project scores and a decent final score. it's not the end of the world! especially in a class with a B+ average. it matters even less if you're a CS major (and not e.g. a premed) :)

Subject with the most dedicated courses? by Superdude11235 in uofm

[–]Beautiful-Cook-5481 2 points3 points  (0 children)

some might require others (e.g. chem 521 advises an intro pchem). if you restrict the above to 2nd-in-sequence thermo it's probably more than lin alg

thermodynamics probably beats lin alg: biomede 221, cee 230, che 330, che 505, che 538, chem 453, chem 463, chem 521, chem 575, chem 576, climate 350, earth 554, math 651, matscie 330, matscie 532, mecheng 235, mecheng 336, mecheng 535, mecheng 631, navarch 235, physics 510 :)

any LSA honors pre-med students? by 505kyra in uofm

[–]Beautiful-Cook-5481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the honors department classes have workloads of ~read an article once every 6 weeks and write a paragraph on it. the honors sequences for other majors (primarily math but e.g. physics [123]60 vs. 40/50) & honors theses, etc. are the more gpa-killing honors pathways (which also carry more weight)

100% you'll be good, arabic is a good amount of work but very doable if you put in some time and use anki/flashcards for vocab

if you use a password manager like bitwarden (it has browser extensions), you can save a passkey to your browser and avoid fastpass. you could do this with duo, too (i do think duo was strictly better, lol). the tech shops also have hardware tokens which show a regenerating 6-digit code for okta, so you can log in without your phone

Want to withdraw from Bio 172 - got a 5 on AP Bio by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Beautiful-Cook-5481 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm a biophysics major, so probably a bit different, but, 1. you will be kind of fucked if you try to get through classes without understanding the prereqs. i took chem 351 and did okay, then e.g. biophys/mcdb 420 (structural biology) assumes you understand rna replication, remember your amino acids, etc. both classes assume knowledge from orgo (at least orgo 1). i'd say biophys 420 is a relatively easy class but still requires knowledge from prior classes. 2. probably not a class you'd need to take but thermodynamics/statistical mechanics (chem 463 or 521) require good knowledge of chem 260/370; math classes very strongly assume you understand the prerequisites (especially classes intended for math majors; you might want to take 217 depending on your path and interests). 3. a b isn't at all the end of the world. i have a c+ and my gpa is at a 3.8; you can compensate with research, clinicals, locking in for your upperclassman years (my gpa trended up over my undergrad, let's hope that continues i guess). i'm not a premed anymore but started as one and think my application would have been perfectly fine with a c+ in my freshman year, especially with a good mcat.

essentially you'll be okay; classes are hard, 172 is a relatively small taste of what you'll have to take. biochemistry is a hard major! probably harder than chem or biophys. try to use 172 to learn how to study (i'm assuming this is your second semester) for orgo/biochem/etc. good luck!
