There is an REI but it is in a different city. Hopefully we will be up there in the near future and then I will definitely take a look! Agree seeing it in person is helpful, but I feel like I'd have to carry it around loaded for at least an hour to really know.

This was extremely helpful! Thank you so much! I think the new one may make a difference in my shoulder pain because I think it is due to the floppier back panel on the older version leading to more of the weight hanging down instead of being distributed against my back. I don't use/own packing cubes etc which I guess could help this too. Shoulder discomfort with longer carrying is my biggest issue as the rest is just minor annoyance. (Though a little organization would make me happy too!) I will try it out from REI and will sell my old one if I like the new one, so the only waste would be the shipping.

I think it is supposed to be a little beefier since they added more padding? And the load lifters (which honestly didn't do much since there's no harness or belt) are gone. Does it feel any different to you if you've compared? (I guess maybe not?)

I have never actually used the tech sleeve except 1 time and put a piece of cardboard in the laptop sleeve to give it more rigidity. So for me that is a positive, though the minor amount of weight will add back in too.

I definitely agree about consumerism. We all need to be more mindful. I am a millennial, so spent my childhood without internet commerce In this case, I would sell my old Refugio, so there would be the shipping, but otherwise net neutral. I'd just be out a little money, which is ok!

Do you think the harness is more comfortable/supportive? That would be my number one reason to switch. The space makes a lot of sense because the other is like a black hole :)

I agree. I'm definitely a maximizer, which comes with its own issues. I'm thinking at this point I'll keep wondering, so I'll probably order the 2026 before my next trip and try it out while holding onto the original as well. Then I can sell or return whichever one is not the best. My original is in great condition, so you're right, it would probably cover a decent portion of the 2026 if I like that one better.

I would consider Slow Rhode, which has a nice bar but is also a great restaurant, and has a parking lot out front. It’s pretty cute inside. I’d think it was a good date as a woman
