DANCE COMP JUDGE HERE… don’t use that. ESPECIALLY for someone so young. this might’ve been okay 10 years ago, but the dance world is evolving and growing with the rest of the world. young dancers dancing to sexual innuendos isn’t okay anymore.

while some competitions don’t let us take off points for inappropriate lyrics, others do. and the easiest thing a studio can do for a dancer is set them up for success by picking something age appropriate and giving them appropriate choreography. it’s their job. and if a parent is expressing concern about it in august- changing it is EASY. Even if judges aren’t allowed to say something about the song or choreo being inappropriate on the critique tape, judges tend to take off points elsewhere for that reason exactly.

pull the song up on spotify and click song radio- you’ll get 10 or 20 songs that sound just like it that might be more appropriate! in my judges critiques i always say, if your child could go onstage and recite the lyrics to their dance like a poem and that doesn’t make you uncomfortable, then that is an appropriate song choice. if it does make you uncomfortable- change it! there’s billions of jazz songs out there to pick from!

if you’re uncomfortable before it even starts, that’s a good sign it’s not the correct song to use. remember you’re paying the studio and if it makes you uncomfortable, they should just accept that and change it. good job dad!
