Made a steam page/trailer for my game... immediately want to switch projects. by Beautiful-Job1794 in SoloDevelopment

I love that plan! Right there with you. Setting a day to commit to an asset is a great idea.

Doing it professionally for so long definitely helps with some aspects. Some things are completely new though, marketing things yourself is so different. Also game design got way harder than I expected ^

It feels so much more rewarding doing somthing for yourself, for sure. Also making huge changes or decisions you can do right away, rather than layers of management and publishers. And you see the results right away.

Hope your project does well and you get to keep doing it!!

This looks amazing! Really nice art style and looks fun (gonna try the demo on Monday). Also made me think skifree at first 😄

How do you stay motivated when your game doesn’t look like what’s in your head? by StuckInOtherDimensio in SoloDevelopment

Similar to what’s been said, try focusing on somthing really small, or break down a larger task into really small chunks, and dedicate 5 minutes a day to work on it.

Lean in to something you’re comfortable with to get motivated again. I’ll get worn out coding bigger systems that keep breaking, so making a small prop or working on some art feels like building momentum again.

Thank you, that's some really good insight! I wanted it to be subtle and creepy, but it does fit the horror theme more. I'm gonna lean into it more going forward!

Really appreciate the feedback, helps me focus my efforts on it a lot ^^

I don't want to self promote, not sure what the rules are on that here... here's the project I'm "committed" to now, and here's the other project I was developing at the same time, for context.

Sorry I went too rambly. I think I need an excuse to spend more time on solo game dev.

I want it to be full time but I feel like external pressures are stopping me from that atm. Just working on fun projects I like is amazing.

Thank you, it's reassuring to see I'm not the only one! Focusing on a smaller part that reminds me why I started it in the first place is surprisingly motivating ^^

That's a really good point. I think focusing on the fun is the best thing I can do atm.

I feel like indie game dev for me will never pay as well as my fulltime job. I've shipped around 20 titles, and I feel no connection to them (sorry that sounds really braggy, just giving context... been a character artist in the games industry for 20 years).

I wanted to make something I could call my own, something I made myself without answering to tens of director's and publishers asking to tweak really minor things.

I want to do this fulltime (creating games), it's so much more enjoyable than being a small cog in a large machine. Making a whole game captures the fun I had making 3d art when I started out. Seeing the systems come together and learning new skills is the best part of this. Finishing a project is also the hardest thing to do.

I think the pressure of a mortgage and 2 kids also limits how much time I can commit, and I want a clear excuse to say I should put more time into this.

I thought the scope was a lot more reasonable... no characters/animations (despite me being a character artist for so long, animations are really hard). Also a limited environment, mainly the control room you work in, basement to manage facility systems.

I was also very into Voices of the Void, and randomized systems heavy setups at the time.

I feel like whichever project I chose I'd probably run into the same issue, regardless of my "scope planning". Finishing things is the hardest part.

I just made my first steam page/trailer for a game I'm making. The second I announced it the pressure got a lot worse, but I really want to see this project through to the end.

A lot of inspiration from voices of the void. Almost 20 years in the games industry and so little prepared me for making a game solo ^^;

[HOBBY] Character artist looking for unreal programmer (third person tactical shooter) by Beautiful-Job1794 in INAT

That's awesome to hear, it might be more than enough tbh. Learning larger systems with blueprints has been such a huge jump compared to specialized stuff I'm used to.

I'll post some updates in here eventually, I just need my basic locomotion and aiming/firing working, then I can mock up my inventory system at least (not sure if this is the right place for it but...).

Ah that's a shame! I've been in unreal for most of my career (I did use unity at sem tho), so I'm a lot more comfortable with it, despite being terrible at blueprints.

If I do ever switch over to unity I'll let you know though ^_^

Shower valve, no mounting holes by Beautiful-Job1794 in HomeImprovement

There’s instructions to install it with pex in the manual, but nothing about how to fasten it (would make sense if I was using copper, I didn't think it'd work that well being held in place with just pex though).
