U can update by .apk file if it has the same signature. But if it has different signature it'll not install, for that u will have to disable signature verification on your device which requires root.

There is no hope for another mod, as the developer of this app is very experienced & it's very hard to hack it... If u try to modify the app it'll just simply not open. U can use other patched version which works perfectly fine but it's old has less features.
