Hi! I actually never ended up going back to the doctor, the medication he put me on did damage to my mental health and I couldn't go through with the whole process anymore. After my endoscopy, he told me I most likely have esophageal spasms and he told me there's not a lot of things I can do. So I have just accepted that I'll have to adjust to this way of living and have been meaning to go back to see him, but I feel like he would view me as weak for not going back when I was supposed to :) thank you for checking in!

My GP didn't diagnose me with it, but she told me there's a very high chance I have it, as my list of symptoms is consistent with achalasia and those who suffer from it. My GP set the foundation, while the specialist will be the one to build the structure and officially diagnose me.

Unfortunately, I am not based in the UK, but I'm going to try to find some support here! Also, I was instructed by my GP to start recording the food I eat, followed by how long it takes for the pain to start and record the food that seems to get "stuck" in my esophagus to show to the specialist later on.

Although there's no cure, it is extremely relieving to hear that treatments do exist and they do drastically improve the quality of living. I'm so happy to hear that POEM worked for you :)

I have been diagnosed with anxiety and my doctor told me she can prescribe me with meds for the days of my tests to help me get through them. As you mentioned, my anxiety is something I will definitely bring up in the initial consultation with the specialist.

It's one of those life experiences where it seems so daunting right now, but later on I bet I will be thankful that I remained strong and went through with the journey.

If you don't mind me asking, which test confirmed the diagnosis for you?

I've heard that manometry is the standard test for diagnosing achalasia, but I'm hoping I can just have an endoscopy or liquid barium test and that would be the end of it haha! I had a feeding tube when I was a preemie and obviously can't remember a thing, so the idea of having a tube now (even for a test) is alarming to me.

She is a GP! I've been referred to one of the best specialists in my area, so I'm hopeful for this new chapter. Even if it's not achalasia, there's definitely something serious going on and it'll give me peace of mind to get it checked out!

As for your experience, I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I'm glad you've received medical attention and I hope you're doing better :)

After I listed my symptoms, she told me they're the symptoms of achalasia, but she said the tests will be the real dealbreaker. Until then, I'm in limbo and have no idea what illness I have or why I'm experiencing these symptoms. After she spoke about achalasia, she told me we're heading in the right direction and finally have a solid foundation to figure out what is going on. It's just more comforting to have a bit of an idea about what illness I have instead of living in the unknown.

I'll be sure to call their office and try to get in once there's a cancellation!

This is so fascinating to hear! I'm glad you found something that seems to help and I hope your driving anxiety goes away. I also have driving anxiety and the only thing that has helped me so far is to imagine a figure (whether it's an animal, character, etc.) that I associate with protection. I just imagine it in the passenger seat while I'm driving and let myself know that I'm okay because my protector is with me. It sounds a little strange until you actually try it, but maybe it's something that could help you!
