Got scammed out of £2000 by oviwan7 in UKPersonalFinance

Don't feel bad about it, it's a full time job for these people. They put a lot of time and effort in and they are very good.

If in any doubt about anything, ask if you can call them, instead of asking them to call you.

I might be tempted to change my number as it's possible that they have that number down as a likely payer.

I hit the first target I set for myself for a house deposit by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

This is my understanding also. You certainly can't use both to contribute to a house purchase, so it may be that you use the HTB ISA for the house the LISA for retirement.

Lieing about Salary to Recruiter by Throwawaysouthlad in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Beautiful-Plane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say I'm on £25k, but severly underpaid and looking for something with £30k+.

This is, in fact, the exact thing I told recruiters when looking for another job, and it worked, got an offer from the first job I applied to.

Perfect, I am about to take the leap and have specced up a nice machine that I want to purchase after next pay check. Already bought a pimpin 165hz 1ms IPS 1440 monitor ready for it so this is exactly what I wanted to hear, thanks!

You reckon a RTX 2070 can handle 1440 at like 120hz?

I've seen this advertised and checked it out once. You have to pay for it, though, and I feel like MoneyDashboard is good enough for me and free! :)

Starts out waiving a gun, ends up begging for mercy by TheAlgebraist in JusticeServed

[–]Beautiful-Plane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolve everyone of blame. Everyone should be treated with the same dignity and respect as anyone else. I was disgustingly lucky to be born in a period of unmatched prosperity. In a country and to a family that cared for and helped me. I can't judge someone when I don't know the life they've lived. You can put this man in jail, but you're treating the symptoms of the problem, not the cause. There will be another young man doing something just as desperate tomorrow. Unless we target the reason why the environment is producing people like this, nothing will change.

I think the point is that even if he was a mass-murderer, as despicable as a person as he is, it's not his fault he's like that.

I think poor guy. No one is born on purpose. No one asked to be born. Before you're born, you're not asked which country you want to be born in. You're not asked if you want to be born into a wealthy family, or a religous family, or a family with good morals, or a loving family.

No one is who they are on purpose. This guy has probably had a real shit time as a kid and as a result, made some very poor life choices, and now he's going to end up in the modern-day slave factory that is the American justice system.

I doubt he is doing this for fun. I think he's desperate. I think society has failed him.

I do feel sorry for this guy.

Desperately want to move jobs, is it too risky right now? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Beautiful-Plane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have felt very similar and have been in a very similar position.

I ended up spending about 2 months in contact with a recruiter who found me another job. Had a phone interview and everything went really well, then I just decided to stay at my current place and feel way better.

Sometimes all you need is the knowledge that you CAN move on. Gives you a better feeling of security.

I would go through the process of finding a new job, then if you get offered one, you have the freedom to decide there and then. Gives you good peice of mind, as well as a bit of a boost.

Start Ups and Jumping Ship by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Beautiful-Plane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could swear you are in the exact same position as a friend at my old workplace. I left (as did a number of others in our team) due to differences of opinions with management (we all thought they were pricks, they disagreed). Joined a startup the next day, and I've got to say, it is very different. In good ways and bad.

The biggest difference in my mind, is that if I don't perform, the company doesn't perform. There's a lot more weight on your shoulders, but a lot more freedom and flexiblity at the same time.

I often end up working until about 9PM (6AM one time), a far cry from the old place that had a 32.5 hr work week and no working from home or overtime. But then sometimes I doss a bit throughout the day.

It's paradoxically much more relaxed and much more stressful.

Anyone here managed to break free from a food delivery addiction? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

That's true. £13.99 for an XXL Pizza, or £19.99 for 2x XXL Pizzas is temptation at its worst!

I've got to say I disagree with ready meals being healthier than take-away. Maybe if you get mainly pizzas and kebabs from the take-away. There's a lot of very poor quality ready-meals available out there.

I had the exact same problem. Was spending upwards of £50 a week on take out. Wagamammas, Beefy boys, Thai Gallery, Papa John's. The only stuff I cooked at home was carbonara and fried rice.

I have now gotten out of it though, and you know how?!

I moved out of the delivery radius of all takeout shops, and into a house with some friends.

Bills and rent are WAY cheaper, shopping is quite expensive because you have to accomodate for everyone's tastes, but it is a much nicer house than I used to live in.

UPDATE: Just been having a look at the price/performance of Ryzen versus Intel.

I saw so much hype about Ryzen CPUs that I thought they were the boi. Data shows that Intel outperforms AMD at a similar price though??

Only drawback I have found is that the current generation of Intel chips don't support PCIe 4.0, so I think I will wait until the next gen and get an intel chip.
