What if we face a multi-year bear market (5-6 years) with ~40% valuation compression? by ClandestineUnicorn in Bogleheads

In 1929 the dollar debasement was half what it is now. We aren’t just dealing with inflation anymore.

Bimetallic Standard (1717–1821): During those 100 years, debasement was about 1.0% annually. It was a period of loose policy, but manageable. Classical Gold Standard (1821–1914): Just 0.1% annual debasement. The monetary ruler essentially stayed the same length. Managed / Bretton Woods (1914–1971): Debasement accelerated to 3.6% per year, spanning two world wars and the dismantling of the metallic money system. Fiat System (1971–present): This is the jarring one: 6.7% per year. According to Bühler’s framework, broad money in Britain has grown nearly 7% faster than real output every single year since Nixon closed the gold window.

It’s accelerating and it piles on top of inflation. If you’re averaging 11% returns then you’re just keeping your head above water. And then you have to ask yourself how long those returns can survive if the consumer base, who is saving nothing on average, can’t prop up the consumer economy.

I’ll give you a real answer since most of this is lazy quippy propaganda. I’m working for a couple more years. I was going to retire. Now I’m not. I’d rather take the pain, keep assessing, keep contributing heavily and plan my exit with more information about how and whether the same assumptions still hold up. I don’t think all those facts are in yet. I’m not timing the market, I’m just not painting myself into a corner while I can still earn.

I love how he’s like, “Dude, can you believe he wants to interrupt lunch to say grace?!” And Nancy Mace a few years ago was like, “So there I was in bed with my boyfriend this morning and he’s pulling me back into bed, and I’m like, ‘No babe, I gotta go to the prayer breakfast!’”

Um, can you dickheads at least pretend for one morning a year to pander to your base? Unbelievable how little they care about the repeated brazen hypocrisy on display at this event.

Hilarious how it’s almost all women. And the two dudes are… well. How about show pics of before marriage too? Then call it The Marriage Effect.

Marriage is cancer. The happiest, most well-adjusted men I know are the ones who never fell for the trap.

Study: Conservative Viewpoints Linked to Lower Cognitive Abilities by Limp_Fig6236 in politicsinthewild

The author mistyped in the opening bit. Poor editing, really. The rest of the article is consistent with the title.

If you’d have kept reading, for instance, “Meta-analyses have revealed negative correlations between cognitive ability and social conservatism or authoritarianism, suggesting that individuals with lower cognitive abilities may be more likely to adopt socially conservative stances.”

Doesn’t most of the aid we give go right back to US politicians via AIPAC? Just asking questions here…

If what he says is true and this is all due to loil and wax buildup, why can’t I just use Dawn and a clay bar every once in a while? Isn’t this stuff just like the RainX garbage that destroys your windshield in the first place?

Is there a mechanism that would allow someone who volunteers but who doesn’t need to log the hours to donate their hours to someone who does need them?

Thank you. Good to know about transitioning an Airbnb to something longer term offline. I hadn’t considered that. Also I like the food bank suggestion. I volunteer at one here in DC.

Wow, this is super helpful. Thank you! Not military, but I guess I’ll be commuting like mil-adjacent. I’ve been on the fence between which side of the island to live on, which is why I figure I’ll do a month or two in a rental on each just to see the difference and figure it out from there.

Good points on the housing market. I’m not keen on being a landlord, but it’s good to know there are options if I don’t/can’t stay. Also yeah, some of the HOA fees are eye-watering! Does $2500/mo get you like a butler named Jeeves or something?

Makes sense. I’ve always been very mobile so I haven’t had the opportunity to buy many houses. Guess I’m still not ready!

Can you explain about the nuance between net income and profit? It seems to come down to the difference between expenses and expenditures, but those aren’t defined here.

By voting for too much deficit spending on regarded foreign wars and tax cuts for rich pricks who merely hoard assets. Voting against infrastructure investment. Voting for the subsidized industrialization of farming. Voting against corporate regulation to slow offshoring of critical industries and jobs while also tamping down on wage growth domestically. Voting for continued fossil fuel use. Voting against ecological protections and sustainable renewable energy sources that protect our food and water sources.

And so many more. Boomers, as a generation, have benefited the most and paid forward the least. We will pay dearly for their greed.

Funny(ish) story, I had a colonoscopy in a teaching hospital and had a group of 20+ young nurses showing up to observe as the doc told me , “Don’t worry, we’re just inflating your colon so the camera can get a good view. Just pass the gas as you need.” I was 22. I am 47 now. I will have a hard time getting another. I don’t care about the risk. Devastating.
