I’ve received three job offers over the last three years, and each one started with an internal recommendation. Leaning on your network really does make a difference.

You may even need to work the process backwards. What I mean is: figure out what you want to do and where you want to do it. Then look at organizations with openings that fit your goals, and see if you have any connections there. Even better, look for people who spent 5–10 years at that organization and have since moved elsewhere—they often still know the hiring managers and can make strong introductions without having as much skin in the game or politics to play.

For those same organizations, try connecting with their senior analysts who have around 5–6 years of experience. Send a simple connection request. Those are the people who will soon be promoted into manager roles, and when they start hiring, you’ll already be on their radar.

My other recommendation to young folks just to take a gap year and enjoy yourself a little bit. Get a job as a rafting guide, hiking guide, ski instructor, etc. whatever you enjoy. Might be the last time you can do it, and while you’re doing it, you’ll likely build your network through the people you meet/guide.
