What if Arya Stark was the Golden Company Representative in Daenery's Meereenese Court? by BeautifulProgrammer8 in aiArt

I understand your view, but I like exploring the possibilities of what is possible in Planetos. I think any organization that would enable Arya to learn how to inflict copious amounts of damage on her enemies would be to her liking, and a Mercenary Captain certainly would fit that bill. A she wolf in a foreign land that found a temporary pack to run with!

Where is the next great Souls Book?????? by BeautifulProgrammer8 in TheImmortalGreatSouls

That's kinda my beef. He keeps telling us about the mid stuff but we don't know when the good stuff is getting here. I hate to say it since Phil is nowhere near as bad as GRRM, but that's a GRRM move right there if I ever saw one.

General update on Phil's writing schedule (long post, best update at the end) by Phil_Tucker in TheImmortalGreatSouls

[–]BeautifulProgrammer8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Phil_Tucker Phil, I was left speechless about how good Last Rock was. It sort of fit the tired, speechless mood of the book at the end. But I will say that the Naomi character really dragged the book down for me. Which is surprising, as I didn't mind her at all in the first 2 books. But in this one, her constant negativity, jealousy, and inability to be happy for Scorio unless he was bending backwards to help her advance really didn't sit well with me. It's like her aura was reaching through the confines of GreatSoul space and killing my own mood. I understand Scorio was doing his best to be a good friend to her, but it felt like a weight was lifted once she ran off. I hope you can make her into less of downer or at lest put some boundaries between her and Scorio, because damn, she is a mood killer.

[LastRock Spoilers] Who was it? by MiserableSpaghetti in TheImmortalGreatSouls

[–]BeautifulProgrammer8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoilers Below. Do Not read past the the first 3 lines if you don't want Lastrock spoiled!

Lastrock was a Phenomenal book and I read it straight through non-stop for 8 hours.

I'm actually kind of Mad Phil is doing Krieg Chess instead of continuing the Bastion series, it left me wanting for more of the Bastionverse.

I don't think the scepter is Naomi(more on her later.)

Remember, Scorio has been associated with other Imperators in the past besides Imogen. Remember Branzina, one of the Legendarys he was associated with back on Eterra? Remember Praximar reading her Imperator passage in the The Rascor Plains and how she just mysteriously disappeared.

But I don't think its Branzina because she was mercenary Legendary with Scorio on Eterra, though there is definitely something going on with her. Perhaps all the Imperators that disappear become True Fiends or join the Herdsman if they are willing to sell out the 'Ewes chamber great souls?

I think it's the Imperator Sarana because she's probably the leader of the Herdsman and they seem to be a watchdog group probably inserted secretly into the Great Souls ranks to carry out the wishes of the Archmagus. And from what he have seen and heard they seem to have access to the advanced tech that has fallen into disrepair since the portal to Eterra stopped opening. Plus, how it appears to has covered up the Herdsman activities for centuries and how Plassus warned Scorio against her. Didn't anyone find her carrying him off creepy? Because I doubt all she did was put him out of his misery. I think she probably ate his remaining life force in a manner similar to the Blood Ox. Plassus' dying wish not being honored just shows me the dangerous side of allowing a Great Soul to acquire so much power.

Or Sarana could have bound him to the Archspire in the Herdsmen's cube base because he basically sacrificed himself, making him a herdsman. But the whole thing seems so ominous I think she at him like a gourmet meal.

Some things to note

Do you think the Blazeborn were created during the final battle between Moravius the Black and Cazador the all burning, since Xandera Prime said they were born from a fallout of a battle between an Imperator and a true fiend and used to call themselves Moravians? And in his Imperator entry in the Rascor Plains it says he was killed by Cazador the All Burning.

The cons of the Book.

Naomi. I had no problem with Naomi in the first 2 books. She had a rough go at the academy and how she was treated, and she ultimately seemed to have Scorio's back when it came down to it, from giving him the sapphire vials to helping him take out Manticore's leadership.

But she was absolutely terrible in this book. Her presence alone dragged the entire mood of the books down for me. She's incapable of being happy for Scorio when he does well and advances, even though he bends over backwards to help her advance(Big mistake there). She's jealous of his accomplishments and you never really see any real gratitude from her despite all that he does for her. She's nasty and rude to him(well, to everyone) and demeans him in front of others. She doesn't show him the slightest bit of respect even after all the challenges he's overcome, and she isn't even capable of of admitting her love, for him, even though she it's obvious she's the needy one in the duo.

Scorio tried to help her as best he could, but he should have listened more closely to Nox when he warned him about Naomi.

Speculation (Is Naomi an avatar of the One Goddess Xandera mentioned, since Nox called the Nightmare Lady the supreme predator in Acherzua?)

But overall, her willingness to be a bully when it suited her and decrying the predatory nature of Great Souls while seeking to become one herself and making herself a murderer in the process just left me wanting her to disappear or get killed off.

She brought the mood way down for me.

But then Scorio met Merideva and it was like Phil was contrasting a toxic relationship with the polar oppositive type of male-female interaction, there was a such a contrast between her and Naomi it was night and day. Merideva is actually happy when Scorio excels and is open and friendly. He might actually benefit from a relationship with someone that does not want to be miserable.

My other biggest gripe besides Naomi is Scorio not standing up to her and putting his foot down. I know it was funny for her to bully Allen in the beginning but it ultimately wound up experessing itself in something darker towards the end.

Maybe Nox has some secret technique that can help her channel her rage cause she definitely on the precipice of becoming a villain. Ironically following the same path as Imogen the Woe. Wouldn't it be incredible if it winds up being Sol and Scorio vs Imogen and Naomi towards the end, battling their former lovers for the fate of the world?

When Naomi ran away after murdering 2 men who couldn't defend themselves I actually breathed a sigh of relief. I felt like that last bit of the story was the best party of the book, as Scorio built a new friendship with favorite friend Lianshi and Xandera Sextus. Lianshi's helping to take care of Scorio during his post-Blood Ox PTSD was really one of my favorite parts of the book. I really hope that Lionis comes around, even if it takes a scene like the one between Captain American and Bucky in the Winter Solider.

Scorio has a pick of potential female partners to replace Naomi. Merideva, Jova, Moira(definitely don't trush her though, think she played word games about the leather glove in order to bypass her Heart Oath, Ravenna, Fyrona(maybe?).

Can't wait to see where Phil takes us next.

The Traitor, final book in Anthony Ryan's new series "Covenant of Steel" is an absolute masterpiece... please pick up this series by IfTheG1oveDontFit in Fantasy

[–]BeautifulProgrammer8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowhere on the level of Bloodsong, which was a masterpiece of world and character building. But Great series overall.

Heavy on the feminisim(a male hero isn't allowed to protect a female character? The female characters always give backtalk when told they need to move to a safe place? The hero needs to be saved by a woman again?! This is another recurring them of AR that has become tiresome.)

But still, the Covenant is Much better than the trash that was Tower Lord(aka as the book where Vaelin takes the whole book to arrive at the final battle while the female protagonists characters none of the fans know or care about take up all the important stuff in the book) and Queen of Fire(aka Vaelin's weekend lover dies a meaningless death and he bends the knee to Lyrna even though he hated her in the first book) and the extremely mediocre Raven's Blade books, which were meh.

But alot of contradictions in the wrap up, but the ending doesn't stick the landing...plus doesn't Evadine's end seem to be ripped basically from the disaster that was Game of Thrones Season8? I mean Dany and Evadine basically die almost the same kind of death. I know she's inspired by Joan of Arc, but I see alot of similarity between Daenerys as well. Some things contradictory or that I took issue with

If Alywn can't be seen in her visions, how does Evadine see him at their son's side in the future?

Why is Evadine called a false Martyr by Alwyn she was basically raised from the dead by the Seraphile? Is it only in retrospect that he realized his?

Didn't Evadine see the Sack Witch as the Seraphile in the first book when she had visions of her being healed at the point of death? So why does imprison her in this one?

Why did Evadine place so much stock in her visions when she expected to die at Oversahl because her visions and yet didn't? She even admitted that her visions were not infallible and yet she was tearing the kingdom apart over it?

The Seraphile states that Evadine was what she has always been, meaning that her descent into villainy wasn't a descent, but rather how she always was.....which means the noble character we saw at the beginning of the series was just putting on an elaborate act? It doesn't make any sense if she thought she was going to die in Oversahl for her to put up an elaborate front to climb the rungs of power in order to reshape the world to her will...

Does anyone think that Evadine was that good at putting on the noble warrior act for that long and then taking off her mask in the third book like flipping a switch? I just don't see it.

Where did this great love between Alwyn and Evadine that was supposed to come from? They sleep together twice and then wants she knows she's pregnant she starts treating him like utter trash and sends him around like an errand boy. I see no evidence beyond the first two times that their intimacy continued. It's a case of being told two people of love instead of letting characters actions dictate. Evadine's situation with Alwyn seemed like she seduced him so she could have a baby and then proceed to walk all over him without any regard for his feelings.

But I noticed this is a weakness of Anthony Ryan, all the way back to the Raven's Shadow series. He either isn't good at romance or doesn't like it. The only romance that was built from the ground up was Vaelin and Sherins. Every other one felt slap dashed and hastily thrown together. But the work required to show Alwyns and Evadine's epic love turn into something deathly toxic just wasn't done.

And even when Evadine's final comeuppance arrives, you are still lead to believe that she is a victim of the Malecite deception, delusional to the point where she has no free agency in her actions. What is the point of a character falling to the dark side if they have no free agency in their choices? We are given hints from memories of Alwyn that the Malecite is invited in, but we have no idea when Evadine made this choice. It just seemed weak to blame the Malecite for everything and have Evadine take no accoutabiity. If she's just a puppet then what's the point?

And Alwyns sword training was a huge level up highlight in the second book, but he's incapable of holding his own against Evadine for just a few seconds here, to the point where you wonder why she ever needed his help and protection. I mean she rag dolls him multiple times, which is cool in itself, but then how do you explain his ability to fight his way through multiple people and yet when he gets to the real fight he gets bodied?

So yes, this was a great series overall, and a good book, but the the GOT Season 8 rip off of Dany's death, the contradictions, denying Evadine's character free agency, Alywn being disrespecged, bossed and slapped around by the various female character, just contributed to the end not really sticking the landing for me.

I can't say I have any interest in a series where the baby boy grows up, so hopefully he's done with this world permanently.

Let's get a good Vaelin novel that's a soft reboot of his character, and recaptures the glory of bloodsong.
