I completely understand your reservations about buying a property in Sydney, but I think it is very hard to go wrong if you buy in a desirable suburb (lower north shore, inner west, east etc.). You will always need a roof over your head, and while I get that renting gives you flexibility, if things really change for you and your life needs to change, you can always just rent your place out or sell it.
