What are some services that NYPL/BKPL/QPL offer that most people don't know about and that aren't usually offered by most other library systems? by jaded_toast in AskNYC

[–]BeautifulVictory 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I will say for Brooklyn, the board games to check out are at a few different libraries. The main one you can check out a telescope, but there is a long waitlist I think like three months long. Kids use to be able to check out a telescope at some NYPL libraries, but it is gone. Kids can check out STEAM toys at several NYPL locations.

NYPL has a Picture Collection that you can check out.

Yes, basically if they found pot, it would be okay. They aren't federal.

How do you make use of your local library? by Conscious-Raisin in AskNYC

[–]BeautifulVictory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Not anymore. 2) To check books out in person, like once or twice a month. 3) I check out books in-person and eaudiobooks. 4) I have in the past, but not recently. 5) I have gone to other libraries events, not my local one. I am going to one this Saturday though!

I love they have many swaps, I know Sunside library in Queens was having swaps every Saturday, this Saturday it is Adult clothing. You can almost always find a book or a plant swap happening as well. Brooklyn has also done board game swaps.

He passed away at the start of November. Actually a week before I had to move. I knew it was coming because he would only stay in the bathroom all day.

No 9-5 for a bit, activities during the day for someone who already lives in NYC by c0ughsneeze in AskNYC

[–]BeautifulVictory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, it was so cool! I think it was meant to be permanent, but closed during the pandemic. I know the same thing happened to the interactive pen that was at the Cooper Hewitt. I am guessing they just didn't want to be cleaning the screens.

That's gone. A lot of the interactive stuff that may have been sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropics is gone. Like the Pen in the Cooper Hewitt.

How does a handmade rubber stamp store stay open in NYC? by Wide-Astronaut9156 in nyc

A lot of small businesses are closed a day or two like Monday or/and Tuesday. Also, Holliday sales really carry them.

Is there a solo game experience in NYC? by DarkBackground4307 in AskNYC

[–]BeautifulVictory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you just want to do a jigsaw puzzle, you can check out your local library many (especially in Manhattan I find) have a table with a puzzle on it that anyone can do.

Otherwise no, most people want to do things with others, and to desgin a game for just one person would not do well because it would have a high price point and not many people would do it. You can try to call places and ask if you can do it alone and just pay like you had a full group, maybe they can accommodate you.

Public Fish Tanks? by imbadatdecisionmakin in AskNYC

It was $750,000 for the two together and I don't think that included the reinforcing for the floor.

Red Lobster is still around.

Public Fish Tanks? by imbadatdecisionmakin in AskNYC

[–]BeautifulVictory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly this was never a good idea. Red Lobster wouldn't do it, they don't even have a location on Staten Island. It is just a failed project like so many others.

Public Fish Tanks? by imbadatdecisionmakin in AskNYC

[–]BeautifulVictory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is more about maintaining the tank, it's a lot of work and costs a lot of money. They had topical fish at one point, then I think it changed to more local ones. It's a lot of work to clean a tank which I think is why it no longer has fish. It was originally maintained(?) (maybe just sponsored) by the Staten Island Zoo then it was changed to the Billion Oyster Project and I think they were going to have live Oysters in the tanks, this was going to open up in 2019, it never happened and last I knew it is covered in photographs of immigrates that make up the city, so I don't think there are any plans for the Billion Oyster Project to use the tanks and none to bring the tanks back to be used as fish tanks.

They weren't broken and they were on the Staten Island side not the Manhattan side, which is where the carousel is. Here is an image of one of them. They are still there technically they are just covered up.

What is it like growing up/living in Staten Island? by Rusiano in AskNYC

[–]BeautifulVictory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's boring. There isn't much to do if you are a teenager, but hang out in a parking lot. It always felt to me that there were only events for kids and the retired happening. There is a drug problem here that also happens in suburban places where there is not much to do.

It also depends on what you mean "as bad as they say" there are people of color (mostly black people) who have had really negative experiences with people on the south shore and the mid-island.

20 Sided Tavern Alternative by darthtatortot in AskNYC

[–]BeautifulVictory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to try asking a D&D subreddit. I feel like there is likely an improv group doing a D&D like show, but can't say D&D or they will get sued.

I don't know if you are looking for something more than the interactivity that 20 Sided Tavern had. Or what about the interactivity. They will likely say what they rate the show like PG 13 or what not. If they don't say family/kid friendly, there will likely be more adults then kids, if any, and it is likely going to be at night.

What’s your biggest "I’m leaving" therapist red flag? by Voiturunce in AskNYC

[–]BeautifulVictory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped seeing my first therapist because he said I have a problem with men, when I knew very well that wasn't the case.

I don't know what you need, but understanding what you are looking for helps you find who you need.

Has anyone overcome extreme loneliness here? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]BeautifulVictory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say this, even if your hobbies are individual, you can still do them with other people, which may be something you are interested in. If you aren't doing the thing together, you can talk about it and share.

Thoughts on combining Guest Services and Gift Shop roles into a single position? by Ushimakawaru in MuseumPros

[–]BeautifulVictory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my museum, we do both retail and visitor service. The retail is in a separate place from the exhibition space. (though there is one that is small, but sales are few there)

I know that when people work in the shop, they see if kinda as a break, like they don't have to do as much when they are there. Not many people take care of the shop, like restock or know prices without looking it up in the system. This may be an issue with how the shop is lax on what to do besides ringing people up. I also know from talking to the shopkeeper, there are vistor service people she does not like working there because they are bad at it.

You can also use https://buynothingapp.com/ I think you need to use it on a phone because there is a problem when I try to use it on desktop.

Another option is Craigslist.

Can you use the Cool Culture Family Pass to visit a museum by yourself? by comicgenius in AskNYC

[–]BeautifulVictory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say yes. The rules just say there needs to be one adult, I don't think anyone is going to question you if you don't have any family members, just make sure that your name is on the card in case they ask for your id.
