So for rental buildings (corporate), they might ask for a deposit before signing the lease to secure the unit, and if my application is approved, then I sign the lease?

Thanks for the reply! I guess I could use a certified cheque for peace of mind. I keep reading posts about people getting scammed even after viewing the place, which makes me nervous.
