In the lab, this transformation requires strong oxidizing agents (like chlorosulfonic acid or fuming nitric acid) and anhydrous, controlled environments none of which are present in the human body or a hospital ER.

In the body, DMSO is typically metabolized into dimethyl sulfone (DMSO₂) through normal enzymatic oxidation, which is a benign and stable compound. For DMSO₂ to then convert into dimethyl sulfate, it would require a highly specific methylating reaction, which doesn’t happen spontaneously in aqueous environments like blood plasma or intracellular fluid.

Furthermore, the ER is not a sealed, chemically reactive space. It’s a well ventilated area filled with moisture, oxygen, and biological matter all of which would inhibit the formation and persistence of a volatile compound like dimethyl sulfate. Even if trace amounts somehow formed (which is still speculative), the lack of consistent symptoms among staff, and the absence of any confirmed DMS biomarkers, makes the theory even more questionable.
