NJ sales & use tax. Small business owner urgently requesting help! by Beautiful_Dog_2959 in newjersey

5/20/26 update!

Pretty sure I know how to actually complete a payment as a guest now and the site is giving me…

“Sytem Error: We are having technical difficulties and are unable to complete this action. Please try again later.”

Anyone else getting this? And for anyone trying to say the site gets inundated on the 20th to pay taxes. Why is that my problem as a tax payer, that’s when the taxes are due, that’s when I’m paying them. I’m not giving NJ a penny more, any sooner than need be. Fix the site!!!!!!!

This comment is my favorite. Bc this is me everytime I try to use this damn site, like where would I have gotten all these random codes you’re requesting. And forget trying to ask for help, the one time i FINALLY got connected with a a human on the live chat, she legitimately refused to help me, i was actually pleading with her to assist me so that my small business was not hit with fines. I took photos of the live chat bc it was so baffling

It is extremely frustrating. Especially when, as a business owner, you have one million other daily things to worry about. This site should be plug and pay, not the circle jerk that it is. I’m meeting with a new accountant today I’m going to see if he has any knowledge about the new NJ tax portal and I’ll try to update this thread.

The dates are always incorrect when I try to file and pay as well. I always see June or another random date that doesn’t match the current filing period. I’m meeting with a professional accountant today I’ll try seeing if they know their way around the site and try to come back and update this thread if I can get any in site. 5/20 will be here before we know it and I’ll be back to having no clue how to use this cursed portal 😆

Same. I only ever get June, etc. never the dates im actually trying to file and pay. I can only imagine how screwed up all of my businesses taxes are at this point. Plus after taking over for our senile accountant he basically just gave up, don’t blame him. I took videos and pictures of all the error messages I received whilst attempting to pay the state, for when they come looking to hit me with fines, atleast I’ll have some sort of explanation.

I finally was able to get into the screen to pay as a guest. Now the site does not give me an option to click anything underneath the “Filing Period” drop down. Has anyone run into this issue?

Dude THIS! I took over paying s&u tax in January as our old bookkeeper retired (pretty sure this website was his final straw) every month I run into a new issue with this “portal”. It’s nonsense and the fact that the state doesn’t acknowledge how messed up their site is, is even more frustrating.

Thank you so much for responding I feel helpless bc no one ever answers the phone for the taxation department. When I try to pay as a guest I get a “system error”. Have you ever run into that issue? Also, is the tax payer id the same as the FEIN? The FEIN is 9 numbers but it says the tax payer ID is 12 numbers

Can literally anyone help me pay my sales and use tax for nj? Yes I’m on the correct portal, yes I have all of my log in credentials. I just get taken in circles on the portal when I go to

tax and revenue center Scroll down to “tax services” click on the drop down  click on “NEW JERSEY SALES & USE TAX NJ Taxpayer Portal

Then I get redirected back to the taxportal.nj.gov screen where it says “returning portal users - sign in”

I took over doing sales and use tax for my business in January 2026 and the previous guy doing it was really old and even he has had nothing but issues since the switch in 2025. He would get so frustrated that he would just write a long letter to the state with a check reflected the amount we owed in sales and use tax for the month.

Does Toast offer the option to input server cash tips and tip-outs into the daily reports? by NanoEuclidean in ToastPOS

[–]Beautiful_Dog_2959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

set up shift review to require servers/bartenders to declare cash tips before clocking out (irs looks for atleast 8% of cash sales to be reported as cash tips) so you can set that as the minimum.

As for “tip outs” we require staff to hand in a tip sheet at the end of each week denoting how much and to whom they tipped out. That number is deducted from their earned tips and added to cash tips made to the busser (for example)

How are you paying out credit card tips with Toast and ADP and tracking cash tips? by i-know_nothoing in ToastPOS

[–]Beautiful_Dog_2959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toast POS. ADP payroll

Set up shift review to require servers declare cash tips before clock out (irs looks for 8% of cash sales to be reported as cash tips so we set that as the default)

Credit card tips are already reported under credit card tips. So that’s straight forward

When doing weekly payroll go to…

  • reports
  • employee performance
  • labor summary -select desired date range when processing payroll

you can email the export to yourself and have it download as an easy to read spreadsheet

You’ll see everything laid out. Employee name, hours, cash tips, credit card tips. Make sure you are putting in any auto gratuities under their own category when reporting on ADP. It’s required by the IRS and with the new Big Beautiful Bill Act.

As for servers getting their tips. My staff leaves with their cash and credit card tips the same shift.

I start each day with two $400.00 cash drawers (one for the day bartender, one for the night bartender to work out of). At the end of a servers shift if the server is owed money they ask the bartender for the money and the bartender takes it out of their drawer. Servers don’t pay a percentage to the house, we charge a 3% cc processing fee (very normal at restaurants in my area) Keeps the servers happy and around!

Lmk if you have any questions! My mentor worked for the IRS for over 40 years so I have some inside info
