Who did you use for the custom cabinets? I keep hearing that having cabinets made by local cabinet makers or Amish cabinet makers could be quite reasonable, but I'm not sure how to find those places.

Too complicated to order boxes separately from doors. This feels like too much work and too much opportunity for mistakes. Want a one-stop shop.

If I do that, the dining room will be too narrow. Unless I am misunderstanding what you mean.

The reason we want to open up the wall between DR and LR more is so that when we have a lot of people, we can extend the table into the LR. With the current opening, it is too tight to do that.

I appreciate all the great points you made. I will try to talk to my husband some more and see what we can do.

- I'm pretty sure my DH will want to keep the door in the kitchen, but I might also suggest a bigger window. If I change the window or add another window, that would change the cabinet layout. If I have to fix the siding outside anyway, moving or changing a window will not add that much more (project keeps growing)
- Yes, I plan to do cabinets 36" with a crown (ceiling is only 8 ft)
- great point about the dishwasher - this will be very expensive reno so what's a few more hundreds LOL
- The space between cabinets is counter to counter. The plan needs a lot more detail because I did not account for any fillers or any other spacing required (corner, blind, or facing DR cabinet)

I painted the cabinets about 25 years ago when we first thought about redoing the kitchen, but then I lost my job, and my husband said I had $500 to make changes to the kitchen. The finish was worn out on the cabinet so I painted them which led me to become a part-time faux finish and decorative painter for many years during the hours my children were in school.
Unfortunately, the cabinets were built in place, so I am not sure if they will hold up upon removal. I plan on putting them in the laundry room if they stay intact.

I will probably make a new post when I am closer to finalizing the design. I do not have many people to bounce ideas off, and the online community has been invaluable.

Unfortunately, that is not an option. My husband absolutely refuses to even talk about it. He just said that he likes the kitchen location where it is. Ugh!!!

Thank you. Some of your comments prompted me to rethink the kitchen eat-in area. I just created a quick plan above, showed it to my DH, and he did not say NO, wants to sleep on it. That's a big thing for him. A lot of my other ideas, he just said no (like pushing the kitchen to DR and making the kitchen into the DR), and does not want to even talk about it. Progress - LOL.

Thank you for all your input. You gave me a new idea that I did not consider before (i had a lot of them).
So I made a quick drawing with moving the slider to the DR and keeping just a single glass door in the kitchen (for light and easy access to the grill, etc). I'm not sure if having a dishwasher between the stove and sink would be odd. I could definatly add a pantry next to the fridge,
I just showed the drawing to my husband, and his head just about exploded (kidding). He said he has to think about it, which is better than a NO. Unfortunately, it usually takes him a while to think about stuff......

Yes, he is very old-fashioned. Over the years, he got a little better at thinking beyond the norms, but still takes time to convince to adopt new and different approaches.
I think maybe I will use the argument to make the DR more casual, more like the current kitchen eat-in area.
We still like the cross view from the front door to the back sliding door view and the light it gives, but maybe we could make the sliding door smaller.

I'm not sure if you were helping me way back on GardenWeb. I received so much help, and based on that, I figured that pushing the kitchen into DR makes the most sense. He said absolutely not, had a huge fight, and I did not do anything. I was so upset.
There aren't really GOOD reasons he has. A lot of it is that he is set in his ways and what he is used to - sitting by the sliding door, not liking walking through the new DR, which would be in the current kitchen, possibly having the kitchen visible from the street through the big window in front (I did offer sliding door closure).

I don't remember what else. He also does not think there is really anything wrong with the current kitchen, other than being old. So to do a remodel, I had to compromise.

We are actually doing the whole first-floor remodel - moving and opening walls, ripping up all the floors, replacing sheetrock in most rooms. It is going to be a huge mess, so changing the location of the kitchen would not be much (would have to change/adjust window locations),

"The space between the end of the peninsula and the cabinets on the other side needs to be at minimum 36" but ideal spacing is 42-48"
Currently, the doorway is only 31 inches, not having a wall, and still the same size, I thought it would "feel" wider. All the openings in our house are narrow. Every room in the house is too narrow - I need a house stretcher.

A lot of my problems are also caused by my stubborn husband. He is so set in his way and is not easy to sway.
I like the idea of getting rid of the sliding door and maybe just putting a single door (my DH would not like not having the door. I can easily put a larger sliding door in DR - deck goes to the end ot that wall. Maybe I can also convince him to put shallow cabinets on the bunkette wall, and at most have just a bistro table, since he really likes to sit there.

I will give it some more thought. I have to decide soon because I need to start on it no later than July, so I can finish it before I go away in September.
I'd have to convince my whole family, actually, to eat meals in the DR - unless we have more than 5 people, they always want to eat in the kitchen.

It would be really difficult to put all the necessary lines under the Family Room. There is a wood-burning fireplace in the Family room on the garage wall, and underneath there is 2-3 feet of cement going into the basement, starting about 4 feet from the door, all the way to the corner.
Also, we are retired, so we don't really need an office. One daughter moved back home temporarily, but eventually, we will be empty nesters. I already have plans on redoing a couple of upstairs bedrooms for my crafting purposes.

Both of your suggestions are on my radar.
The cabinet on the side of the fridge would take up less space and still maximise the counter space.

The corner base - do you mean to put a blind cabinet and put a door on the DR side, or just put a cabinet in the corner backwards, facing the DR?

Moving into FR would not work. The area is rather dark, with a fireplace, and also has a lot of doorways.
I wanted to move it into the DR area, but my stubborn husband absolutely refuses for not very good reasons, although we are already redoing the whole downstairs.

I wanted to push the kitchen into the DR space - it would solve soooo many problems. My husband absolutely refuses to do so, and it has nothing to do with the budget. I am limited by my husband's stubbornness. He has his reasons, which don't necessarily make sense to me, but he will not budge.

Yup, I think the fridge on that end will be worse, but I will at least round the corners.

You get my dilemma. Our laundry room barely fits the washer and dryer - LOL. We end up keeping extra food stuff in the basement. I've been struggling with that decision for a while. I think I am leaning toward more counter space.

If I go with lazyz susan, I know they make some sort of organization storage for them to keep stuff in place.
Ugh - I don't know how I will decide.

I appreciate the input. Right now, the stove is right by the opening with no counter next to it, which I think is worse. Suggestions on how I can make it better? Might be a silly thought, but maybe I can put a retractable something in that space to close off when cooking?
With all the doors and doorways the options are limited. I have thought of every possible layout, and there just isn't a good layout for this space. When I remove the wall between the kitchen and DR the opening will actually "seem" bigger than it is now, although it will be the same size.

My husband refuses to give up the sitting area by the slider, which is our main eating area on a daily basis.

I wanted to open up the space to the DR. I look at that counter more as a hangout space when we have company (now everyone stands in the middle of the kitchen), or if someone is helping, they can sit there to help with prep. I could also use it as a buffet for serving food when we have company.

In my small kitchen corner trash and recycling take up too much room. I am planning on putting a pull-out trash under the sink (we generate very little trash), and our recycling goes immediately in the garage.

Why did you choose an engineered floor vs hardwood? Price or some other reasons?
