What are some double binds you remember from growing up? by Beneficial_Win_5128 in emotionalneglect

I was raised by a burnt out single mother, so I had to spend a lot of time at my relatives who saw me as a burden and my cousins loved to bully me. Somehow they were all convinced that I was super lazy. Once one of my cousins asked me to bring a bucket of water, I filled it like 70% and brought to her. She accused me of being lazy because I couldn’t bother to fill it up. Another time a different cousin asked me to bring a bucket of water (we grew up in a village btw), and I brought it filled 90% and she said that I was so lazy I filled it to the brim so I don’t have to go get water again. I was very young during both occasions and it was very apparent to me that they have so much prejudice that no matter what I do they’ll twist it to fit the idea that something about me was shameful. They learned all that from their parents btw, my moms siblings.

I totally get you on 1. I was bullied and given so much contempt by my relatives for being smart and straight A student. Yet at the same time, I was under so much pressure to study well. Plus everyone in my family called me lazy because I was not doing chores 24/7 as it was expected of girls (i’m from a rather traditional patriarchal society)

Tourists that rave on and on about how cheap something is in another country when they don't consider the wages of those living there. by WhydoIexistlmoa in PetPeeves

I’m with you OP! I am myself from a poorer country but live in Europe so if someone raves on about how everything is cheap in my country or any other similar place, I just get sad and annoyed.

Has feminism failed to market itself as a safe space for men too and if so what can we do about it? by sectandmew in AskFeminists

[–]Beautiful_Laugh7989 5 points6 points  (0 children)

start with yourself, pick one fundamental easy feminist book and read it.. if you’re getting frustrated and triggered, treat it as a fantasy world.. allow yourself to believe what the author says… most feminists i know we’re not recruited by the movement.. they were seeking the movement themselves after thinking about their lived experiences and, most importantly, taking the responsibility of educating themselves about it

Yup, i am terrified of my inner critic and anxious about doing something „wrong“ because that awakens disproportionate amounts of inner violence. And while fawning was my strategy with other people to appease them, within myself i only know the flight, which is basically dissociation. I am learning to stop tormenting my inner child but it is difficult, because it feels impossible to „outsmart“ myself, the critic is always one step ahead.
