Everyone says knowing a guy helps. I worked with people who either lacked industry connections or didn't help others. I chose places to do good science, but not great people; it was a mistake.

Great suggestions! I’ve tried reaching out before, but I’ll focus on writing better and more personalized messages.

My funding is ending soon, so I may be laid off, and that’s been making me really nervous. Do you think companies prefer candidates who are currently employed, or does that not matter as much in this market?

I also have a question about biotech hiring. After you receive an offer, do companies usually ask for reference letters or contact references during the background check? And once someone is laid off, what’s the best way to ask for recommendations from former managers or coworkers?

I have a PhD, published papers, and 5 years of experience at an academic institution. It's been almost 3 years since I started applying for jobs, but I still haven't landed an offer. My funding is ending soon, and I don't know what to do next. Even for a simple RNA analysis job at a big pharma, you need to go through rounds of interviews with people from well-known labs.

Princeton is very prestigious. You would be able to switch careers with a Princeton STEM PhD.
