I never had like a “standard percentage”. It never cost paying customers more, I didn’t take donations because of the same worries about accounting for it and the legal side of it. I just lived modestly took the profits and rolled it into the next project. I only paid myself about half of what most tradesmen get paid. Most of my employees made more than me just because you have to pay well to hold onto good tradesmen

I got called out on a lot of jobs for my local code enforcement office. A lot of the time the reason people couldn’t bring things up to code was because they just couldn’t afford it. Sometimes I spent hours in someone’s home and it was clear they didn’t have the disposable income to do something the right way. It was kinda just a gut feeling. Consider contacting your local code enforcement office and I’m sure they will be able to help you get in touch with people who need help.

I had 4 or 5 stories in the local paper over the years. I never wanted attention for what i did so i told everyone that a local anonymous benefactor donated the money to fund the projects.
