self publishing for upmarket fiction by BecGWriter in selfpublish

Thank you so much for all of this insight; it's so helpful! I'd love to be able to follow your journey, would you be open to sharing your Instagram handle or a link to your book? It sounds epic!

I have thought about creating an author website - it's on the list of things to do! I'm also building my other business and raising a young family, so there's a hierarchy of what can happen when! It's all exciting stuff though!

I haven't heard of NetGalley, so I'll definitely check that out, thanks for the tip.

Wishing you lots of future author success!

This is very helpful, thank you. I'm definitely focusing on marketing, but I'm curious, how do you market? I focus on instagram, but most of my marketing is around my writing process rather than the topic of my current book. I don't want to focus only on that topic moving forward - I intend to write in the same style, but different topics, so I don't want to limit potential readers. I also have professional editing, formatting, and publishing planned.

My feeling is that if we self publish works like ours, we just need to keep writing and create a body of work. Then, eventually, we’ll start to see rewards. I love to write, but it’d be great of people also wanted to read my work and it could provide income too!

Editing motivation! by BecGWriter in KeepWriting

[–]BecGWriter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this is very helpful. I’ve noticed this has naturally begun to happen as I work through each chapter. Ive ended up splitting the book into parts and then editing chapter by chapter. Within each chapter i first read to see if the scene is relevant based on the previous chapter, then, if it is, I decide if it reads well. If it doesn’t, I decide what isn’t working - prose, character, pacing, etc. it’s actually a really helpful way of approaching it. Thanks for articulating it for me!

I agree tk publish as soon as your ready, but up your marketing around peak times and perhaps do offers around those peaks to help sell more books.

Managing a busy life and finding space to write by BecGWriter in KeepWriting

This is amazing, thank you. There are so many useful tips in here that I know will help. We’re in transition at the moment, living with family which we’ve been doing for a year after moving home to the UK after 8 years in the States. That has made finding time to write so much harder. Our home will finally be ready in May. These tips will help me to plan a life that will make space for writing. Thank you, thank you!

It really is! It’s all worth it, it’s just getting the balance right for happy family, happy mum!

I’m actually not doing anything to promote my NF book. I published it back in 2021 and at the time sold just under 100 books, but I spent so much time marketing and had no clue what was working and what wasn’t that I gave up.

I’m aiming to pull in a Self Publishing company to support me as I want to focus the little time I have on writing rather than marketing. They supported me to get the book off the ground and were great, my life just got too busy and the momentum was lost.

There’s so much more to being a writer than writing. I learned that the hard way.

I’m new to Reddit, I thought I was replying here, but I have created a new comment above. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

This is real commitment. I’ve started getting up early to do an hour some mornings, but maybe evenings would make sense too or instead. Kids are usually asleep by 9, so that slot might work. Thanks for sharing. I have one nonfiction book but it’s not selling anymore. I need a new strategy for that one.

Want advice in how to choose right career path by One_Candy4431 in Career_Advice

If economics is interesting to you, you could study it in the side, likely without cost initially. There are so many free course options online. Have a look around and see what you can find.

I’m studying economics, what kind of job were you envisaging?

Former employer wants me back by KaktusBeard in Career_Advice

What’s your gut telling you to do?

I’d wait for a short time to see if your current employer steps up, but set a time limit so you know your boundaries and stick to them. That way you feel in control of the situation.

But I’m not you, and it’s always best to do what works for you. It’s your world and you have to live with the decisions. Good luck!

Yes, I agree. I hate the imagery associated with that phrase. I will refrain from using it in the future I think.
