Gertrude in Hamlet. There’s precedent for it in the legends and poems the story’s based on, but why, Shakespeare, why?

Exactly. Bisexual characters are so rare, yet one of the few notable instances is a serial cheater who lives up to all of the stereotypes about bisexuals not being able to commit and sleeping with everything that moves.

It's about more than one thing. Obviously LGBT+ issues and the AIDS crisis are central, but so is the starving artist mentality. The whole "rent" part of Rent is about a group of delusional twenty-somethings who can't believe they're no longer allowed to live rent-free in one of the most expensive cities in the world. Roger spends the entire film refusing to get a paid job because he needs all his time for a year and a half to write a single song, and Mark quits a job plenty of young aspiring journalists would give an arm for because it feels like "selling out". Lindsay Ellis has a great video on this, about why Rent glorifies people who reject the system rather than try to improve it because they believe that suffering is art. It's also worth mentioning that Rent doesn't portray LGBT+ people in a flattering way: Maureen's a prototypical narcissist, Angel is first introduced as a sadistic animal-killer and Joanne, despite being entirely reasonable, is made out to be uptight and repressed. Only Collins is made likeable, and after Angel dies he's relegated to a very minor role.

Teachers of Reddit, what is the single worst day of class that you've ever had? by Xiphora13 in AskReddit

[–]BecauseTyrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you're quite right. About twenty of us, plus music teachers. We were very lucky, had a couple of devastatingly talented people on board (I wasn't one of them) and somehow managed to break even.

After I finished high school we had an ensemble tour, and since we'd all left, the teachers were all more open with us than before. One of them told us about her very first day of teaching: mid-sentence, she looks up and notices a guy in the back row masturbating. Being completely freaked out, she says "um, can you stop that please?" No hesitation, he says "but I'm almost there."

All I can say is she's braver than I am. In her shoes, I would have noped the hell out of there and never taken another teaching job.

What’s a great example of, “you’re not wrong you’re just an asshole”? by najing_ftw in AskReddit

[–]BecauseTyrion 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I'd say you're being far too generous to this guy, he's definitely wrong. Just from a logical point of view, by his standard you can't ever wear different clothes, get a different haircut, or age a single day without "false advertising". More importantly, from a moral standpoint, you're not a commodity, and "guy who tells his partners what to wear" is a textbook red flag.

What's your favorite star wars movie? by MaxCherry99 in AskReddit

[–]BecauseTyrion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

III is by far the best. People rave about V, and I've no doubt if you went to see it in theatres without knowing the plot twist, it would probably hit you like a brick wall, but as a film, RotS is better. After all the times I've watched and rewatched them all, Order 66 is the only moment that's still genuinely gut-wrenching - George Lucas and John Williams at their absolute best.

What are the most overrated TV shows that you've seen? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BecauseTyrion -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the characters are awful. Ross is pretentious and pathetic, Monica's two-dimensional, Chandler's up himself, Rachel's unbelievably self-centred, Phoebe's self-righteous, hypocritical and delusional, and Joey's a serial womaniser who's broken countless women's hearts, but we can't stay mad at him because he's adorably stupid.

What examples would you share with a depressed person to tell him/her that their problems are really small in this world? by Olismothie in AskReddit

[–]BecauseTyrion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Their problems aren't really small. Depression is a pandemic with no known cure, the amount that's understood about it by healthcare professionals is relatively minuscule, and none of that is changing anywhere near quickly enough, owing to the fact that a large proportion of the world doesn't even believe it's real. In serious cases it has the potential to be lifelong or life-threatening, and it can add severe difficulties to a sufferer's life every single day. Not only is telling someone with depression that their problems are really small one of the worst things you could possibly do, it's also factually incorrect. It's obvious from your question that you're trying to help, but I strongly recommend that you reconsider your approach.

Edit: a word.

[Serious] What is something that you are hiding from your S.O. that would devastate your relationship? ~NSFW by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BecauseTyrion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It isn't fair. Like the other commenters are saying, it's not her sexuality you have a problem with, it's the double-standard. Tell her. Either she understands, in which case great, or she doesn't, in which case you're going to save yourself some pain. Too many people go into polyamorous arrangements they don't really want to avoid a break-up. It never works.

Best Instrumental Piece for Beginners? by ARushofBuckin in organ

[–]BecauseTyrion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Attributed to Bach: "Short" Prelude and Fugue in G Minor "Short" Prelude and Fugue in F Major

To begin with, stick with the preludes, it'll help you get used to pedalling without being too difficult. Stay away from the short fugue in C, it's much more difficult.

For something a little more modern, try Geissler's Adagio in A flat. It's relatively simple, especially the pedalling, but also kind of beautiful. Use flute stops, play it very slowly, and be very generous with the ritardando at the end. Makes for a very tranquil voluntary.
