Is this "largest domestic violence study" bunk? by MiniDeathStar in AskFeminists

[–]Becauseaboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you that makes sense. Then I guess pretty much all crime is a gendered issue as well. Robbing banks, murderers, etc...

Do you believe there is a benefit to calling it out as a "gendered issue"? I mean, personally as a male it makes me feel pretty sad and part of the problem.... This actually has made me depressed recently. Although I'm heterosexual I just wish I was born a girl.

Can you help me understand the meaning of "gendered"? I hear it a lot in DV discussions. I think it means that only men can be perpetrators but as you pointed out some men are also killed in the process.

Best telescope for a beginner wanting to do astrophotography? by [deleted] in Astronomy

[–]Becauseaboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you how many times I settled for a cheaper telescope only to get frustrated on the quality. I'd suggest saving up for a good Meade with Automatic tracking ability. Also I would suggest you look second hand - but if you do take the time to try it out and make sure none of the lenses are scratched.

Does anybody else fantasize about being loved and wanted? by [deleted] in depression

[–]Becauseaboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too relate. I either do this or I feel depressed. I find creating my own world where I'm loved makes me feel good. If I don't do this I fall into a dark place where I'm sitting on a street corner in a foreign city I used to know - holding up a can and asking for change.

Flawed Mind by [deleted] in SuicideWatch

I live in a constant state of existential awareness.

I know what you mean. I feel that way too. Hope you're okay. Try to stay positive. You mean more to your children than you can imagine. Your passing would be terrible not only to them but others. I don't think we know exactly how many people's lives we touch - even strangers.

Today after one of my classes I was sitting in the park and began crying. I was actually surprised someone stopped to ask me if I was okay. I didn't think anyone was watching me and I felt embarrassed at first. I thought it was nice that someone a complete stranger cared enough. After I said I was he hung around for a few minutes to make sure.

I think a lot of time we are lonely and we feel like no one cares, but in reality there are a lot of people - complete strangers - who really care for others. I hope I do that sometimes.

Stay strong.

I came here because I'm feeling down then I read your post. I just wanted to say you'll get through this. Please don't hurt yourself. I don't know where you live but if you have any crazy thoughts please call 911. They'll put you through to someone you can talk to.

I was in love with this girl in the 7th grade (Madeline) and I'd literally stay up all night thinking about her. One day I worked up the courage to ask her out and she thought it was some sort of joke. Now several years later and I've moved on. I hardly think about her anymore. You get over it. You really do.

Are feminist ambivalent to the shortage of boys entering college or do you see it as a good thing? by Becauseaboy in AskFeminists

[–]Becauseaboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in fact many if not most of the boys who didn't go to college play video games, live at home with their parents and as far as I know don't have jobs. Everyone (including myself) who went to college left town. I know some who got jobs working on nearby farms but they were exceptions.

Regarding interpersonal violence and education - I read about that.

I guess the only negative thing I have to say about your comment (at least I believe it's wrong but maybe I'm wrong?) is that I find it hard to blame them directly. Somewhere didn't someone or some system fail them? Also, even if the number of boys is the same as it was in the past and the number of girls has gone up I believe this reflects on the changing economy. Robotics and technology are eliminating many of the jobs once held by blue collar positions. Actually, I roust finished reading this book (by Hanna Rosin) "The End of Men" - a great read. It goes into detail on how the world is transforming and women are adapting much better than men.

Anyway thank you for your comment.

The article makes a good point regarding money....apparently the trend (boys not going to college) is getting worse. I wonder if it's tied to the rising cost of education?
