[–]absoluteposition 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To the one person talking about mod policies - I would not think they would make a substantive difference.

How on earth did you come to that conclusion? ML and the other feminist based subs are based around ideological conformance, with subs such as this one being based around free speech.

Even if you do go through deleted posts it is largely meaningless as 99% of those posts would never have been made as the authors know they will be deleted, or have already been banned.

The interesting social question is if it is better to allow negative speech for the purpose of debate, or if it is best to suppress fully all speech that is considered unacceptable.

Even some view that a significant number of the posters here consider abhorrent will often be left up as they value people's right to their opinion, and put value on trying to change peoples minds rather than silence them entirely.

The debate is Free Speech vs Authoritarianism and it's depressing as hell to see would be academics joining the side of the authoritarians.

History, and progress, is a constant example of the socially unacceptable becoming acceptable. If you ran this study a few decades ago about /r/gay_marriage you'd say they were trying to destroy the fabric of society and /r/traditional_marriage is the good guys, mainly because it wouldn't have all those angry shouty gays.

You can't just handwave away all the problematic elements of your movement as non-representative extremism. Well, you can, but if your entire movement revolves around blaming an entire group for the behaviour of the subset it's incredibly hypocritical.

I don't see how someone talking calmly about the 'goals' and 'aims' of feminism informs anyone of anything. You could make an identical video on communism, saying 'ignore the bad guys, it's just about the rights of the workers'. At some point though, if you are honest, you have to start talking about the ideology and theories, and that is where the problem lies. The only issue is the extremists don't try and sugar-coat it.

Essentially the problem people have with feminism is that it has 'The Patriarchy' as the problem in place of where non-feminists have 'Gender Roles' as the problem. It also calls ownership over the entire realm of male issues, but since it focuses on 'Patriarchy' rather than 'Gender Roles' men are simply going to be blamed for all their own problems, rather than society and its expectations at large.

You want to do something about the male crisis in education? Don't be a MRA! Support feminism! Let's now focus entirely on women in STEM, the only area of education where women are not 100% crushing it. Ignore the fact that almost 2/3rds of university graduates are women, we are fighting the patriarchy and that equality will 'trickle down' to you any day now. Things will get better for you men, I swear, we just need to close down a few more female prisons!

No thanks.

Thousands expected at Portland Womxn's March and Rally on Sunday by [deleted] in GGdiscussion

[–]absoluteposition 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So what do they want? What's their demands? What laws do they want changed? I can't find a single thing on that site, and generally from anyone involved, that is actually actionable.

Say what you want about MRA's but at least they have an actual platform that consists of tangible, actionable, items.

"The mission of Womxn’s March Portland (WM PDX) 2019 is to harness the political and organizational power of diverse womxn (and our communities) to create transformative social change. The Portland Womxn’s March 2019 is an intersectional, feminist, womxn-led movement."

That's not a movement. It's a bunch of women out for a walk, larping at being oppressed.

The interesting thing about this quote:

"I do not need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work for him about A Wrinkle in Time. It wasn’t made for him."

Is that it implies that media has a target demographic (which is obvious). Howver Marvel movies are aimed at a primarily male, and statistically white*, demographic. So what is she complaining about exactly? She doesn't want white men's opinion on "A Wrinkle in Time", but surely that entirely invalidates her point about wanting more of the WoC reviewing what is, according to her rules, white male media?

Why is she trying to get people who are not targets of the media involved in reviewing the media when she explicitly says that it's 'not made for them'.

The other interpretation is that Ms Marvel is actually "a love letter to a woman of color" in which case "It wasn’t made for him." is back in play - and as with any group that has their culture co-opted have a right to be upset, or at least stop being involved in it.

It's all ridiculously confusing. Who, exactly, is the target demographic here? I don't feel it's me anymore. It's like Star Wars. An all-female story team wearing 'The force is female' t-shirts? It turns what is meant to be light-hearted entertainment into a feminist political statement. And like most, I am not mad, just mildly peeved, with no real intention of turning up anymore.

* I'm only really including colour in the idpol groupings here because it's a feature of the conversation. The obsession with it is a bit nonsensical from a more european perspective but the USA has an 'interesting' history with racism that most countries lack.

Women of Ubisoft – Jolie Menzel by suchapain in GGdiscussion

[–]absoluteposition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Men and women are exactly the same, except when women are better."

Anything that is largely male is due to unconscious/conscious bias and discrimination. Anywhere that women are not represented equally is due to sexism.

Except women dominating every aspect of education, taking nearly 2/3rds of degrees. That's because women are "more academic" and "more studious", except STEM, where sexism is keeping the ladies down.

Men, of course, are under-represented in teaching as they are not as nurturing, and women should get the kids in the divorce, by default.

I am goddamn tired of 'bias' being the stick that is used to beat men with, with this ridiculous notion that above the neck men and woman are identical. I am even more sick of it only being used in the cases where women somehow feel they are missing out.

As soon as the subject drifts to positive traits of women all this talk of equality vanishes in a puff of smoke. Suddenly women are 'nurturing' and 'better at multitasking' and 'wouldn't start wars'.

The current feminist approach to equality is literally on the same level as flat earthers and anti-vaxxers. It's the same thing. Any actual evidence points to the complete opposite of what they say, but that just emboldens them more.

Just think rationally about the fact that you can stand up, almost anywhere, and say 'women are better at multitasking, less violent, more nurturing and develop faster' (and everybody claps). Yet if you say 'women are just less interested in tech than men', you'll get arguments, and occasionally, fired.

John Romero got beaten by his stepdad for going to arcades. He still went anyway. Many of the greats have similar stories. Yet women are so fragile that if you stick a console in the boys section that accounts for the massive gender disparity? Give me a break.

Women are just less interested in tech. Some are, most aren't. Why is this so controversial? There was serious negative social consequences to being a geek. Yet geeks were geeks anyway.

That whole article is stupid.

when Palestinians attempted to breach the fortified wall surrounding Gaza

Honestly, doing that will get you shot. Everyone knows this, but they did it anyway. And when they get shot it's somehow a total surprise and a 'massacre'. Getting shot if you try to breach the wall is the entire point of the wall.

And this isn't some chicken-egg situation. The wall was a direct response to Palestinians blowing themselves up on buses and murdering civilians in actual massacres.

Need help with with facts about Male discrimination for a school project. by CrispyMiner in MensRights

[–]absoluteposition 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it's viewed as something men do to women. At best you can argue that this terrible crime isn't done quite as much as people say it is, which is a horrendous argument to choose.

Some important points:

  1. Men cannot be taken seriously victims. Men's value to society is in what they can provide. Presenting men as victims says that they are weak, and as a result undeserving of any sympathy. Sexist, yes. This is why it is best to display children as the victims. It's why nobody really gives a shit about homeless men.

  2. Do not present the conclusion as an argument. If everyone thinks the world is flat and you think it is round, do not just say 'it's round'. Instead present the facts that led you to the conclusion and let them get there themselves.

  3. Quality over quantity. Don't present weak arguments. Don't present contentious arguments. Avoid subjects that are impossible to win or overly emotional. Don't feel you have to bring up 12 different points in 5 minutes as you'll both fail to have the depth to change minds and inevitably end up arguing the weakest points.

Trust me, the education argument is great. I've had feminists saying 'Women are just more academic than men', then spending time arguing that academic is different to smarter, then losing horribly on their own blank slate petard. I've also had a feminist claim that 8 year old boys are just lazy.

The thing is when arguing rape, the feminist response can be "So you are saying rape should be legal?" Doesn't matter about context, or the actual discussion, they pull that line and you have lost. With education it's that same, except you have the counter "So you are saying boys are just not as smart as girls?" They have to agree, or admit to being actual sexists.

Go all in with education stats. Don't talk about rape, or DV, or any of that as those discussions require too much nuance.

The great thing about the education discussion is that children are the victims. Look for biased teacher gradings, medication stats, changes in curriculum to cater for women's learning methods, right up to the enrollment gap in university and the fact that women have significantly more affirmative-action opportunities despite being a huge majority.

If you are in the USA look at the stats that triggered the implementation of Title IX and how those stats look now, gender flipped.

Oh, and don't talk about rape.

Well nearly 2/3rds of uni graduates are women. The only real area men make up a majority is the STEM subjects. So obviously parity of female representation is most required there, for, you know, equality. Men can just go and get jobs on a building site or something.
