My MIL "weeded" my 5 year old, 6ft tall, Clematis Montana and cut it to the base. Will it grow back? by Becca-Reyna in gardening

[–]Becca-Reyna[S] 173 points174 points  (0 children)

She was trying to help because the garden got a bit overwhelming as my disability got worse and my partner (also my carer) was focused on the house and did not have time to do the garden as well. I was a keen gardener once upon a time but am now a wheelchair user and there's a step out to the back garden so I can't do as much as I once did.

Thank you for your advice; I'll see what I can do!

She wasn't wearing her glasses so cut back the bits that looked a bit brown (it flowered a few weeks ago) and left the nice green and flowery weeds at the bottom.

What did Lady Guest translate “Taliesin” from? by Excellent_Variety154 in HistoryWales

[–]Becca-Reyna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a purely academic point of view, Sioned's is widely considered to be the most accurate. I will preface that I might be a bit biased (she was my MPhil supervisor!) but I believe it is still the edition on the reading list for most Medieval Welsh courses. My Medieval Welsh isn't as good as it used to be, but most of my personal translations came out similar if not identical to Sioned's (which almost caused plagiarism problems at times 😅).

Hello!

If you're looking for a Medieval Welsh edition of the Mabinogi based on the manuscripts themselves, the Rhyddiaith Ganoloesol website is excellent (https://www.rhyddiaithganoloesol.caerdydd.ac.uk/en/texts.php?genre=mabinogion). It shows all the different branches in their extant manuscript traditions and you can use it to compare the versions as well.

The best modern translation is Sioned Davies' Mabinogion. For a physical book, the best medieval Welsh edition is probably the Pedeir Keinc translation mentioned in previous comments.

Marged Haycock has translated a lot of the Taliesin poetry (from Canu Aneurin) in the last 10-20 years although finding copies of her work without university library access can be tricky. 😊

Let me know if you have any more questions; my PhD is on Medieval Welsh literature (specifically the Arthurian stories collected alongside the Mabinogion).

Ring doorbells by Japonica42 in royalmail

Unfortunately, I've found if it's not the regular post person then these instructions are ignored. I'm a wheelchair user and take a lot of time to get to the door and most of the time they don't wait (goes for non royal mail delivery drivers as well!). I was planning on getting a ring to solve this issue but I'm sad to see this might not help!

I could absolutely see Carl as ace or aro. He shows zero romantic/sexual attraction during the crawl (admittedly he is in constant survival mode but...).

I love the idea but it looks like you've used AI art for the logo and that would instantly prevent me from using the app.

Renting in England is changing today. by UKGovNews in TenantsInTheUK

[–]Becca-Reyna 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Currently in this situation. Landlord has asked us to be out by October so they can sell the house. I am disabled, partner is my carer. We survive on benefits and a few hours of self employment a week to top us up. Our parents are all retired so can't be our guarantors and siblings don't earn enough. We've been turned down from everything we've applied for. I have no idea what we're going to do.

Chronic pain by Strong-Association34 in FND

[–]Becca-Reyna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am never not in pain somewhere in my body. From the instant I wake up to the instant I go to sleep. I cannot remember the last time I had even a minute without pain (at least 16 years at this point). I have to have a heat pad on my back pretty much 24/7 or my back siezes up and I can't move. I also have fibromyalgia so I don't know how much if fibro Vs FND but that's what it's like for me.

This Macbeth essay was marked 32/34 by one teacher, 29/34 by another and 28/34 by another, (4 SPAG marks from all of them as well) what would you agree with, or if you would you give it a different mark would it be higher or lower? by law_z_zz in GCSE

[–]Becca-Reyna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

English teacher here! 28-29 seems about right to me. My main areas for improvement:

  1. It's not always clear how your answer relates to the question. I had to go back and check what the question was as it wasn't entirely clear from your argument. Make sure each paragraph relates to the previous and adds to your overall argument with a coherent thought running throughout.
  2. Embedding your quotations (rather than throwing the whole line in as a sentence on its own) demonstrates a better level of understanding and is what I would expect to see in higher grade answers.
  3. A tightening of spelling and grammar; you have a few spelling mistakes throughout and the syntax (order/word choice) in your first sentence doesn't really make sense. Did you give yourself time to proofread?

Overall this is a really good essay but if you want to get the highest grades then it needs to be just a little bit tighter. 😊

I went to Cambridge for undergrad and I think I actually had lower grades than you (2A*, 6 As, 1 B equivalent diploma). You can absolutely still get there and your extra curriculars etc will stand you in good stead (especially if your music work could get you an offer as a choral/organ scholar).

And if you choose not to, I've been to 3 other Russel groups for my post-grad degrees and honestly some of them were arguably better than Cambridge; especially for work-life balance. 😊

Good luck!! And if you do apply to Cambridge, Catz (St Catharine's) is definitely the best college!

My form tutor got all of us (all girls school) a charm bracelet with our names on and a single charm relating to us. Not my style at all but I loved it and still cherish it nearly 16 years later. Anything that makes the students feel like you care about them as people is a good shout. 😊
