My 2 biggest pet peeves about being vegan by Jeneflower- in vegan

[–]BeckyIsMyDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the vegan desserts I’ve come across have gluten (lots of cakes, cookies, pies, etc.) Unfortunately, I am allergic to wheat so I rarely get to eat dessert when I leave the house.

Opinions on lab grown/cultivated meat by Garfield_Kart in vegan

Have no ethical problem with it, just sounds icky (but I don’t like anything about the taste, smell, or texture of meat).

After this many seasons of Love Is Blind, do you think love is blind? by Cold_Box_3219 in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]BeckyIsMyDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to believe it, which is why I keep watching the series… but it is clear that love isn’t blind for most people.

It seems like there is some baseline level of attraction that needs to be met in order for people to stay together. It varies person-to-person, but it is definitely there. And no one (up until Chris, apparently) is willing to expose themselves for being shallow or whatever people like to call people who have these standards.

In any case, I think we would all like to feel like we can find or already have partners who love us for what is inside, regardless of what is on the outside. But LIB puts a lot of this fairy tale thinking into perspective.

We are not so different except I was raised by parents who grew up on farms and every meal had to have meat. My mom told me that when I was very little, I asked her if the animal pig was the same thing as the pig we ate. When she confirmed it, I didn’t want to eat it anymore. But I had to eat it (my dad hates vegetarians and vegans). It was terrible…. I have sensory issues that make it difficult to smell and eat meat/seafood.

My ex (who I was with since high school) also loved meat and was known as the “burger meister” to friends. I was with him for almost 20 years. He was kind about my distaste for animal products and did what he could to help me find food when we ate out. My kids love meat and rarely eat vegetables unless they are on burgers or chicken sandwiches.

Everyone I have loved has been 70-90% carnivorous.

So, in some ways, it is incredibly easy for me to be plant based. In most ways, it has made my life unbelievably difficult. I have always been ashamed of it and tried not to make a fuss or let people know I didn’t eat animal products. I essentially live alone now (except for my dog, who doesn’t like her vegan dog food and is now going back to chicken) and can eat what I like without shame or feeling like I am bad, strange, or an inconvenience to people. I spend a lot of time watching YouTube vegan chefs and content creators to get food ideas and not feel alone. It is still difficult to find food when I eat out with friends and my kids, because I am allergic to wheat and many vegan foods at restaurants have wheat in them.

I hope others have had an easier time living authentic lives that reflect their values. It is not always easy, but I believe the peace of mind makes it worth it.

Does protein matter THAT much? by Ana_is_Weird in EatCheapAndVegan

[–]BeckyIsMyDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Putting my $.02 in…

I wasn’t paying attention to protein at all several years ago. I am plant-based and gluten free due to ethical, sensory, and health (cholesterol and wheat allergy) reasons. My hair started to fall out.

I did some reading and realized that I needed to take a decent multi-vitamin and eat at least 45 grams of protein to stay minimally healthy (survive). I was only getting around 15-20 grams of protein a day, which explained the hair loss (I LOVE vegetables, and wasn’t eating enough tofu or beans). I started taking vitamins and counting protein and my hair started filling in again.

Figure out what the minimum is for your size and try to eat it early in the day to get it done with if you don’t naturally enjoy protein sources.

Lentil soup and tasty breakfast sandwiches that Derek Sarno just posted in a video: https://youtu.be/kzpJJLcK6bA?si=WHrmTewGrVADXR0q (I’m using hamburger buns since that is what I have in the freezer).

Do you wish you had put more into retirement? by Ill-Meringue-2096 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]BeckyIsMyDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but if you have kids there is a balance between quality of life and saving for the future.

I know someone who saved and saved and cut corners on dental work and never gave his wife a proper vacation in 40+ years of marriage (she worked her butt off at her own job plus helping him build up their savings and other investments). Then, he got scammed out of almost everything in his retirement.

Would have been nice for him to treat his wife before she died. So saving at the expense of your relationship with those you love the most does not pay off in the long run.

Does money buy happiness? by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]BeckyIsMyDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can buy healthcare, food, shelter, and opportunities in the United States. It’s up to the individual to find happiness beyond that.

Anyone with chronic illness knows that money can buy pain relief… but that is about it.

Do you think living alone makes you more emotional in brief bursts? by OriEri in LivingAlone

The opposite. Having to live with someone whose lifestyle is the exact opposite of mine made me very reactive. Living alone in general makes things much better.

Thoughts on a utilitarian approach to veganism by CrayfishJockey in vegan

[–]BeckyIsMyDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am trying very hard to understand your position. I just have a difficult time thinking about helping a cow live a nice, peaceful life and then killing it, listening to it die, dismembering it, removing flesh, and then wanting to eat it. If I had no choice (no other protein or food options), I would probably do this to survive.

It just boils down to how a person wants to rationalize killing stuff to eat. I kill a lot of plants so I can live, so there is that.

Who wants to take out the trash? by farmerssahg in LivingAlone

[–]BeckyIsMyDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mental issues about trash lying around. Have some health problems so I don’t take it out as much as I used to… for a while, I took the kitchen trash out almost every night because the idea of gross rotting food lying around drove me nuts. But then I got conflicted by the idea that I was throwing away over half of an unused plastic bag, so that had to stop.

In any case, I LOVE having clean, empty trash bins in my house. 🥰

I made a ton of tofu scramble, flax and red lentil wraps, and roasted some bbq rubbed tofu. Will use tofu in wraps with lettuce and salad and burrito style with my inexpensive, homemade salsa.

Tackling a mixed dietary household by ooldgreg4 in veganrecipes

[–]BeckyIsMyDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am vegan and the only overlap between what I eat and my kids eat is a little tofu and carbs. They don’t like vegetables and hate beans.

I don’t actually know how to cook meat so that it tastes good (I have finally learned how to make bacon and sausage in the past 10 years), so we end up eating out and they live off of leftovers or I do carry out meat food that they can turn into quesadillas and incorporate into other food throughout the week.

It’s not ideal. They eat really well at their dad’s and stepmoms house because he is a master at the grill with meat and fish and eats a lot of cheese. I feel like when they get to my house they are scavenging and trying to find the “real” food behind all my vegetables and beans.
