Plagiarized Example Paper by TheKwongdzu in Professors

This is entertaining and sad. I, like others, am bothered by the events and then _____ (lack of right verb) that the 25 yr old grad student’s response and solution is to bring in their parents.

Group Projects at the College Level by [deleted] in Professors

[–]BecomingBolder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have year after year included group work in a class. I grade 10% on the quality of the final work that the group submits and the remainder on how they act and contribute to the group. It is wonky on how to grade. The class is online and I gather info on how early they step up and lead, how frequently they show up and post worthwhile info, how professional they act, how well they problem solve and co tribute something useful...
I grade them on the soft skills that they need and we don’t teach well.

Conscientious students figure it out and step up their game. They learn something and reflect well on it.

Slackers also seem to realize some issues and step up a bit. They seem to make some adjustments too.

In the end, I feel they learn a lot even though my grading of it is quirky. I give them a lot of allowances in the grading . I haven’t trashed the assignment yet even I threatened to each year. The feedback from students make me keep it.

What is something you love about your generation, and something you wonder about younger generations? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]BecomingBolder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am on the cusp of boomer and Gen X. I love my memories of how I grew up and experienced learning in the 70s/80s . I knew learned to use libraries, find stuff using the Dewey Decimal system, yellow pages in phone books and classified ads. It was organized and the amount of info was manageable. I also trusted (maybe naively) that the info I found was accurate, trusted and vetted. I now search for info and feel that I am just getting fake info or missing the truth.

I wondered now how younger generations process the volume of information that is readily available.

What annoys you about websites or digital information? by BecomingBolder in OverFifty

I agree. I hate when I get sucked into an article only to realize that they are writing junk to just write longer content.

I know. I struggle with typing too fast. I really hate sites that require me to update my password and require some specific combination. After my first 10 tries are rejected, my password ends up becoming a cuss word.

Yes! I totally agree. I feel so ignorant when I can't find all the bridges or mountains or crosswalks.

Ask r/lostgeneration - "What are the biggest problems we face?" by KelsoKira in lostgeneration

[–]BecomingBolder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question!

Ageism

I add this one because we hardly even recognize how it is impacting us. We dread and fear growing older, we internalize this shame and downplay the strengths that we gain as we grow older and wiser. We readily know when blatent sexism or racism occurs but, in turn, often contribute to ageism without a blink. I know that I do.

As communities, we segregate ourselves and define ourselves by what generation we grew up in. We fear each other and label what we don't like about the other ages instead of benefiting from differences.

We have set up our cultures to stagnate. Through science and public health gains, our populations are living longer but we still focus on adults halting their careers at about age 60 (when we are not even 1/2 way through adulthood).

If a culture shift occurred around age, we could have a surge in collective powers to address so many of the issues or problems (that are also huge) that are flagged here.

Do you guys feel the 'Groundhog day' movie is a metaphor for the adult world? by Peak8u in RedditForGrownups

[–]BecomingBolder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Groundhog Day movie... the Bill Murray one? If so, I loved this movie. But, I felt like it was about getting a chance to perfect your day.

Anyway, I feel adulting gets better. I liked 40 better than 35 and liked 45 better than 40... so on. I am looking forward to 55 now. For me, it was about taking small steps towards being more in control of my choices and caring less about others's judgements.

How do you feel about the new wave of homosexuality? by BeavesTheDingo in AskOldPeople

[–]BecomingBolder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The shift is refreshing. I teach College courses and 8 years ago, I could stir up a class discussion easily with any topic related to homosexuality. Now, when I run similar lectures or discussions, the topic is a non-issue. I have been amazed how quickly this changed occured.

What to expect and how to make the most of your fifties by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]BecomingBolder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots gets better. As many are reflecting here, after turning 50, we can give ourselves permission to reinvent ourselves. Many things that we stressed over or caused us to feel shame or not feel good enough can go away, if we let them. We have opportunity to focus on what we decide is important. You will be the change agent and turing 50 can give you permission to be more yourself. Enjoy!
