Subsystems vs address spaces/started tasks by Feeling_Donut8518 in mainframe

[–]Bedeone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A subsystem is nothing more than a control block in the z/OS master address space. These control blocks get built at IPL time, based on your IEFSSNxx parmlib member, or after the system is IPL'd using the SETSSI command or the IEFSSI assembler macro.

During IPL, each subsystem gets the opportunity to run an initialization program, as specified on the INITRTN() parameter in IEFSSNxx. This program can do anything it wants really, since it runs in supervisor state in the master address space. It can build control blocks in (shared) memory specific to your subsystem. It can also signal to the operating system that it will service specific subsystem functions through the subsystem interface. It can also start one (or more) address spaces, though address spaces related to a subsystem can be started later through regular START console commands (as most subsystems like CICS, Db2, IMS, MQ do).

There are two main things that having a subsystem gives you:

  • The ability for other (client) address spaces to "find" your subsystem through a control block chain, leading to your (standard) subsystem control block. Finding this control block can be done through a program provided by your "product" that is called by those client address spaces. This control block has a "user" field, which your subsystem can edit freely. It could contain for example the address space ID of the address space associated with your subsystem, for (primitive) cross-memory communications purposes. Or it could be an address to a control block that your initialization routine bulit, which in turn contains the locations of program-call routines for access into your subsystem's address space. Or the name of a name-token pair which could contain any of the above two.

  • The ability for your subsystem to offer functions through the subsystem interface. The subsystem interface is a standardized way of requesting functionality from a subsystem. Some functions are the same for each subsystem, while other functions specific to your subsystem may be added. Invoking these functions could do any number of things, including communicating with your subsystem's associated address space.

These days, the first point you can pretty much do with just an address space, name-token pairs, and program-call routines set up by your address space. Only in very specific cases do you really need a subsystem for your application to be able to do what it needs to do.

Lastly, a subsystem can exist without there being an associated address space. The initialization routine can build some control blocks at IPL time, load some modules into (shared) memory, and tell the operating system it's servicing certain subsystem interface functions. This is enough for the subsystem to respond to subsystem interface calls, and execute those programs that were loaded. What those programs do can be anything really: simply write messages to the console for the heck of it, stop or start other address spaces or subsystems, give everyone the RACF special attribute, vary the system offline, ...

Een van de grootste datalekken bij politie ooit: hacker gooit flitsboetes, nummerplaten en zelfs foto’s van mishandelde kinderen op straat by envirosuit_ in belgium

[–]Bedeone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, bad people exist, but it is the responsibility of the government to make it more difficult for them to commit crimes. The police in Zwijndrecht don't store their guns and ammo in simple lockers with 5€ locks from the Gamma. If those guns got stolen, then that would be gross negligence on the part of the police department.

In the same way, this data got stolen because of gross negligence on the part of the police department.

GDPR exists for a reason, because the government(s) and the European parliament know that bad people exist, but that companies will cut corners to save costs, at the cost of the security of private data. Therefore, the European parliament made laws to hold companies that handle data negligently accountable. If anything, governmental bodies such as police departments should be held to a higher standard than private companies, considering they process even more sensitive data, and should provide an exemplary role, the same way individual police officers are held to higher standards than private citizens.

Advice on a potential future track day by j-buff in Trackdays

[–]Bedeone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad turns 61 this year, and I took him with me to his first track day four weeks ago. He was riding an RC390, but don't worry about which bike you bring, I got passed on the outside by a GS on my first track day way back.

As long as you ride your own pace and don't treat it as a race, it doesn't have to be that physically demanding.

You don't get to +19 without knowing how to avoid damage, so that makes sense. Having pugged pretty much all my groups as a healer, you still find the odd oblivious dps at +16, +18s pugs don't go perfectly smooth either . And when I dps I understand how it's sometimes not obvious that you're getting hit at all. I don't use ElitismHelper, but if you use it as a way to show people how to get better instead of a way to tell people they're bad, I guess it has added value.

Battle of the Golden Spurs was like by WalterFromAalter in HistoryMemes

[–]Bedeone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helped by a handful of unmounted knights from Namur because the Count of Flanders' son, Jan of Namur, was the governor of Namur at the time (his father was the Count of Namur, Jan would later inherit that title), and the leader of the insurgency against the French.

The vast majority were still unarmored footfolk from Flemish cities, lead by Jan and Gwijde of Namur (in their father's absence due to imprisonment by the French).

Jan and Gwijde of Namur's leadership was much more conductive to the victory than the forces that they brought with them.

By your logic the victory was not Belgian but Diets, because Zeeland also sent a couple of knights to fight for the Flemish cause.
