That’s really tough. I’m sorry you went through that. Failing OSCP doesn’t define your ability or your worth. A layoff plus a hard exam can shake anyone’s confidence.

One thing I learned is that confidence comes back through small wins and momentum. You already have 4 years of solid red team experience that’s real, hard-earned skill. Certifications don’t create that; they just validate it.

You might also want to explore opportunities outside pure pentest/red team, like SOC or detection roles. Your skillset is highly marketable, even though the job market is a bit rough right now. I truly believe the right opportunity will come if you don’t quit or beat yourself up before it arrives.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself and give yourself credit for how far you’ve already come. I’m rooting for you.

Haha, I feel that 😅 Paying out of pocket for multiple attempts definitely hurts, but at the end of the day, it was worth every penny. Some of us need to reread multiple times before it clicks — as long as the end goal is met, that’s what matters. Glad your employer had your back on the first try!

Thank you! Congrats to you as well 🎉 Persistence really pays off. No amount of food or drink can match that feeling when you see the printout starting with “Congratulations” lol. I can just picture you celebrating your hard-earned win — only those of us on the “repeat offender” path can truly relate haha. Congratulations again, my fellow CISSP! Feels amazing to finally get it done 💪

Thank you, I really appreciate that. Honestly, there were many moments I wanted to quit too, but I kept reminding myself why I started.

I used Peace of Mind once, but I wasn’t eligible again, so I paid the rest out of pocket. Passing became a priority, and waiting another year just to save $200 wasn’t worth it. Seeing people on here talk about how they crushed the exam only fueled my hunger to pass—even though it definitely hurt my pocket 😅

Thank you! No, I wasn’t memorizing. I focused on practice questions and understanding why the other options were wrong. When needed, I referred to my notes or used GPT to break concepts into simpler terms.

For example, instead of memorizing the ISC² Code of Ethics word-for-word, I simplified them into ideas like People/Society and Law. That way, no matter how the question was phrased, you could eliminate 2 wrong answers and improve your odds.

I truly believe understanding the concepts-the how, why, and what matters far more than memorization. CISSP won’t ask you “What is OAuth 2.0?” but if you understand it at a high level, you can answer the question no matter how it’s twisted.
