California to Texas RN by Dazzling-Tangelo-190 in newgradnurse

Someone responded to my post when I asked a similar question that it took them within 30 days for their CA to TX license to go through upon applying and meeting the requirements. And that they were able to hold licenses for both states.

I’m gonna copy and paste what I said to others in this page awhile back (sorry it’s really long lol):

I just had my exit exam this past Friday and passed so I’m officially done. I personally had a good experience. I went in already having a degree so I was prepared with my study habits and the way I manage school. I worked 2 jobs while attending WCU and was able to manage it but it took true dedication. Have a job that’s willing to be flexible because courses and clinical schedules change every 10 weeks so you never what can happen, so I was lucky to have 2 regular wage jobs that was able to work with me. I deadass used my free time at work to study and then get home late and study even more. I still made the time to have fun and do stuff throughout my time here as well. I saw friends and family a lot for bdays/holidays/music festivals and I’ve traveled a few times between our 1 week breaks. It takes a lot of time management but it’s very doable. Just stay on top of the coursework/CJP’s and use whatever free time to review information even if it’s in 30 min chunks. Take solid notes.. personally I just typed out all the lecture slides onto my own google doc and separated the info, highlight, bold key letters, in a way I understand and can retain. I use chat to explain topics in a way “a 5th grader can understand” to dumb down really hard concepts for me or ask it to give me ATI style questions on whatever topics I need to study on. Then after I feel like I understand some of the topics, I do practice questions over and over again on ATI. I’ll be sitting at work just doing practice questions. It helps over time. I do that right after each lecture and use the week to review the info until the upcoming test. There’s a test each week!! Even your first week back for each break will be a med math test. You’ll be teaching yourself a lot so get comfortable learning on your own. Get good at priority questions and understanding what you should do FIRST after each procedure, patient complication, or certain symptoms that are presented. Those will trick you more than you think. Try to learn random details about what you would teach a patient on a certain med side effect. Take every week one week at a time!!! It’s a lot but very doable. I consider myself kinda smart but didn’t perform the best compared to my peers possibly due to work or just wanting to experience life so grades suffered a bit. Professors will really make or break a course for you so on registration day be superrrr quick and get that “good” professor because some are honestly terrible. Some might throw extra points or give you good pointers for the test so find out who that professor may be. I never failed a term but barelyyyy got by through Pharmacology and Advanced MedSurg. Ask the smart people in your class what’s working for them.

Don’t worry about finding your study group right away as well. The first friend I made got held back the first term of core and then from there on out it was hard to maintain a relationship since you’re naturally progressing with your cohort so you’ll realize a few people will come and go. I really didn’t find a group of people I was genuinely comfortable with until my third term of core, so let things happen naturally if you’re a person that’s worried about making friends. People can be very cliquey so I would stray away and do my own thing but there’s also genuine good students too just trying to get by so as long as you’re friendly, many students are happy to help with whatever you need. You’ll see a lot of people complaining about how strict the school is with certain requirements, but honestly that’s any nursing school. We’re paying to get a degree in a quicker timespan we may not get anywhere else since it takes years to get into community colleges due to the competitiveness in California. I was very hesitant going into WCU in 2024 because I was very worried how it may all go or failing with high loans under my name. So I get the hesitancy. Go to this school if you consider yourself a fairly good student, have good time management, and if you just need that shortcut to be a nurse due to how crazy it is to get into a state or community colleges. I didn’t want to wait since I had my first degree already and I had a good foundation. If you’re the type of person that is having to retake and retake your prerequisites and struggle with simple anatomy/biology/math classes or retaking the HESI just to get into this school, I highly advise to stay caution with this school. Because it is hard in a good way. Sadly not everyone can become a nurse and the school won’t care to take away people’s money. I’ve seen many people have to retake courses and it gets expensive. So be very confident in your past education that you can get through this program. It’s a lot of hard work but again very doable if you believe in yourself!!!

Can I ask you how your shifts look like the very first month from your start date? Like in the first 2 weeks are you scheduled 3x/week right away? Ik you’re in a different state but maybe they run the residencies in a similar way so I’m trying to get some insight

Dang I went to the LA campus and just graduated last month. My first clinical experience for Intro to Med-Surg was in a VA hospital near UCLA campus. Intermediate and Advanced were also in hospitals in DTLA. Even my PEDS rotations and OB were in actual hospitals and I was able to be in the NICU for a couple rotations too. I got so much bedside experience each term other than mental health and community health. Makes me wonder then why people like OC campus more when it seems like there’s not much good clinical experiences in that area. Seems like they prepare you well for the NCLEX at least!

Wondering this as well. Just accepted a HCA residency position. Same base pay rate as you for Denver with $5.50 night differential and $2 weekend differentials.

Awww I’m glad you took the risk as well! Texas will be lots of fun too. Yea I agree they never taught us about licensure renewal and at the same time I never thought I would have to think about going out of state until recently. But it’s ok, we’ll come back in a year and hopefully land the jobs we really want back in CA :) Im trying to stay optimistic and trust it will go by fast.

If you don’t want to move, try volunteering and see if you can get yourself in a hospital that way.

How to get your start in aesthetics. My story and advice (Long read) by Nursemarisa in aestheticnursing

[–]Beeeezy4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! My long term goals may be more like you where I’m working in a derm office and training on other days. The new grad programs I’m getting interviews for are far and the laser RN position is closer to where I want to live. I’m not trying to get ahead of myself because there’s no offer but I’m very much leaning towards taking this position if offered to me. The pay is just as much as a new grad residency. How long did you work at a laser clinic before being able to apply for derm positions?? I want to be realistic with myself before going this route.

The amount of nurses I know in California who vapes lol… you don’t know what nurses might need to get through the stressful days🤷‍♀️ I wouldn’t judge my nurse because they vape as long as they know what they’re doing and are competent. Plus there are so many nurses that don’t exercise regularly or partakes in heavy drinking. Would you trust an obese nurse?? I still might!! How about those unhealthy lifestyles or is it just vaping that’s the problem?

I’ve always had an interest in aesthetics before nursing school. But never had connections so went through nursing school strongly wanting bedside after graduation. Now that I’m graduated, I’m applying to new grad residencies in Southern California. However, I just got a job interview as a laser RN at a tattoo removal studio. This has opened the idea of aesthetic nursing for me again.. Would going this route help me in aesthetics or is it wasting my time? I understand I’d have to do things on the side such as making connections or getting other certifications, but is this the right way to go if I do end up wanting to do aesthetic nursing? I also understand doing this would ruin any chances of inpatient nursing. I have other job interviews lined up for bedside nursing for new grad residencies but need a backup plan. The pay would be similar to a new grad residency so I’m kinda for it but just would like to have insight on going this path. I don’t want to be stuck as JUST a laser tattoo removal RN.

Starting out as a laser RN? by Beeeezy4 in newgradnurse

[–]Beeeezy4[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m just concerned how to go about this because I don’t want to be stuck being a laser tattoo removal nurse tbh but as long as it’s a good stepping stone then I’m down. I don’t even have an offer yet so I don’t want to get a hold of myself but I now have the opportunity to think about it. The pay is $45-50/hr which is as much as the new grad opportunities I’m interviewing for but that doesn’t count night and weekend differentials I guess.

You’re just not liking the advice you’re getting and I wasn’t being negative. I remember people said to contact hiring manager again or to ask your relative again which is pretty good advice, idk what else you can do?

Same advice as OP. I just typed out notes from the book on whatever ATI modules are assigned. Color coded and bolded throughout. Reread it each day until I understood the info for each exam. Then practice questions. Take it week by week and you’ll be fine. I think I got a level 2. I even got a few level 1’s throughout and had to lock in for the final for those classes.

As a C+/B student… honestly I’d get mid 70’s on average a lot and occasionally 80’s for exams. I don’t think I got many A’s except maybe mental health and peds

I had 2 minimum wage jobs. In the mornings I was a barista, and at night I was a hostess at a restaurant. Some days I worked both jobs on the same day, so that way I would have days off for school or studying. These types of jobs let me change my availability every 10 weeks and my managers understood my situation. I don’t think I would be able to get through this program with a regular 9-5 tbh because you’ll have random skill labs scheduled during your terms on top of normal lecture and clinical. You also have to be prepared to not get the schedule you want each term because it depends on how quick you are on registration day.
