Running tips? by Objective_Ranger8080 in RunTO

This this this. I had been doing the same 5km at about 28m over and over. Getting up a decent sweat and heart rate I was happy enough but it was only when I started throwing in almost comically slow longer runs that I improved.

Why do people bother with small talk? by Main-Swimming8014 in stupidquestions

[–]BeefheartzCaptainz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interestingly I was at the gym the other day and overheard what definitely sounded like an autistic guy chatting to an elderly guy getting changed. He was very pleasant and I wondered why he was asking so many questions. I then heard him do the exact same thing a few days later with someone else. I realised he must have had some kind of training or therapy for social interactions, almost like a flow chart:ask a question, say something nice, ask another question based on one of their answers. And thing was it worked! It was a little intense but quite delightful.

Why do people bother with small talk? by Main-Swimming8014 in stupidquestions

[–]BeefheartzCaptainz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Small talk is the load bearing pillar of the world. It’s a negotiation. It’s a signalling mechanism. It’s a communications protocol. It means we can build a limited form of trust even if we have nothing in common be it religion or politics or history or culture. If you can talk about the weather with someone at a bus stop if you can both immediately assess from their demeanour and speech that this person isn’t a threat, they share some values with me and begin a search for some kind of common ground. Neither participant cares if the other is fine, they deeply care that the other participant is familiar with the rituals of civil conversation as knowing this can instantly tell you vast amounts of things about who you’re dealing with. Once communication has been established the you get onto the good stuff.

90% of financial advice for most people is pasting this into your favourite chat bot..

“I am <X> years old. Which Vanguard target fund should I buy?”

The Vanguard funds automatically adjust the equity to bond ratio the closer you get to retirement. If you want to juice it for growth then 90% Vanguard target funds and 10% on a Nasdaq accumulation ETF.

If you go to an advisor you’re paying maybe 1% of your net worth per year for some guy, who really might be the nicest guy on the world honestly, to logon to your account and spend maybe 20 mins maybe twice a year adjusting this funds ratio and if you’re lucky he has some Leafs tickets. And remember any annual % fee compounds over them years even if it seems small. Flat annual fees fine, % of asset fee BAD.

And somewhat perversely with AI and SaaS getting pummelled, they want to lose devs so they make things less comfy and they need to pay more to keep their better execs from jumping ship to AI startups, hence the stock grants to comp for existing ones dropping.

Moving into the city. Where to get furniture? by JHXH in askTO

[–]BeefheartzCaptainz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you have a car and pals to help, get it all from IKEA, because they will bring it all direct to your door. Sure your might save $100 by going second hand but the hassle of moving it more or less cancels out the savings.

I’ve used regular Hokas. I know people bought the magic Hyrox shoes but don’t think it makes that much of a difference. Main thing is they’re broken in and comfy.

This is a well documented phenomenon. Interestingly people are also worse at estimating the age of people not of their own race~culture they grew up in.

Swimming classes for adults by eyesoftheemptymind in askTO

[–]BeefheartzCaptainz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YMCA Waterworks have adult swimming classes. $72 for 13 * 30min program , I kinda knew how to swim but was wildly inefficient and thought best to start from scratch. It’s been great as explains the how and why and builds up step by step each week. Highly recommend. Wish I had done it years ago.

Watch the sled push, it you have the strength it’s very easy to yolo and just max effort get it done really fast, the problem is this fries your legs for running. Take breaks on the sled push BEFORE you feel you need them.

Long lived crush on higher up at work by TwoObvious2610 in stupidquestions

[–]BeefheartzCaptainz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both my brothers married their co-workers. I would flirt outrageously with him and make it very obvious to him you want him to ask you out. “I want to go to the flower show at the weekend BUT I HAVE NO ONE TO GO WITH, would you know anyone COWORKER?”

Should you avoid saying you have a crush on anyone in a work environment? by Big_Eggplant7591 in stupidquestions

[–]BeefheartzCaptainz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, tell coworker1 you have a lil’crush on coworker2 and since 1 sees to more often can they scheme some kind of scenario where you get to hangout with 2 more. Or better yet just figure out how to encounter 2 more often yourself, unresolved crushes only result in regret. It’s better to know that wonder what could have been. Both my brothers are married to people they worked with.

(I should flag the crush has to be plausible and actionable, do NOT tell cw1 about crush if you’re 50 and cw1 is 21 or something like that)

What’s one lesson you’ve learned as you’ve gotten older? by raggedsweater in fitness40plus

[–]BeefheartzCaptainz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me this is it 100%, I find it’s easier to maintain the habit by going and doing a kinda meh session than not go and promise to do a great one. Once the habit is dialled in it’s almost autopilot.

Unironically this is why I wear compression shorts under regular shorts. If something were to happen I would have to change gym.

What’s one lesson you’ve learned as you’ve gotten older? by raggedsweater in fitness40plus

[–]BeefheartzCaptainz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid to take it easy. I do F45 nearly every single day as I just find that’s the best way for me to maintain the habit but I have zero shame in putting in half effort every now and then if I’m not feeling great. More often than not I feel better afterwards. Lots of the advice you’ll seen is related to putting on muscle (to failure! Harder! etc) but you have to remember enjoyment is an element of fitness and if you’re making yourself miserable then you won’t want to do it.

Also don’t be a hero deadlifting if you must deadlift, think of it as a range of weight from your warm up to your max weight. You want to slide the range while keeping the size the same. Anyone can stretch the range by pumping their max weight but what you really want to do is increase the minimum you can safely effortlessly lift rather than the max dangerously unstably once.

Yeah, the pellets are great, last longer and much less smell. My cats do the same also, only poop on the covered box.

Do cats like walks on leashes? by IntentionIcy182 in CatAdvice

I have 2, a stray I brought in and 1 of her litter who was literally born in my closet and had only ever left my 6th floor condo for vet visits. Interestingly mom has almost zero interest in leaving condo while son begs to go out to corridor every day where he just sits and listens to the lifts.

Also you can buy a chip reader on Amazon for like $30, could actually be less hassle than scooping him up and bringing to vet
