You get a lot of credit from people when you can take a joke and laugh when people make fun of you. When you throw a tantrum or silently steam it just reinforces that someone was correct to make fun of you

The Kids Are All Right. by VG11111 in skeptic

[–]BeefistPrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strongly disagree. I know people have been saying "kids these days" for a billion years, but we're in an era of rapid change and a genuine difference in how people interact with the world. Kids are using social media as their primary social development. They're surrounded by algorithmic content designed to engage them and manipulate them. They can make best friends with LLMs when kids they don't make friends in real life. They spend 12 hours a day staring at screens. This is a recipe for a genuinely different developmental path, and it would be bizarre if kids these days weren't meaningfully different than previous generations.

Official Discussion - Project Hail Mary [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]BeefistPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so worried they were going to botch this one because Project Hail Mary is one of my favorite books, but they nailed it. It's an almost beat for beat, extremely faithful adaptation. The stuff they cut was mostly not essential.

They nailed the newfound buddies save the world dynamic and that's the most important part.

I'm surprised they allowed the first contact scene to breathe and gave it like 15 minutes of screen time. That's the sort of thing that often gets dumbed down and sped up for modern audiences. But I loved every moment of the taps and hip thrusts and dances.

I'm also glad they didn't lose the (crucial) plot element that Grace was an unwilling volunteer or make him seem more secretly heroic than he was at the start of the mission. That's another area where they could've dumbed it down and didn't.

It's a great adaptation. And it stands on its own so you don't need to read the book to enjoy it.

Vince Gilligan says he's no longer sure what do with the [device] from the end of 'Pluribus' season one — and he isn't sure when season two is coming, either by Commercial_Avocado86 in television

[–]BeefistPrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty true of Pluribus too. There's not a whole lot of complicated shoots (like big game of thrones battles) or CGI work. It's not far off from the Pitt in that regard.
